Or perhaps we all imagine this things because she looks so delightful mysterious in the movie that everyone wants to know what is behind those enigmatic eyes!

Good point, Morgause! I hadn't thought of that. I wonder what Miranda thinks of these two characters pasts. The way she plays it gives you the impression there's more to their story.

The way she plays it gives you the impression there's more to their story. That's what I like best about the way she plays it. You never quite know how much she knows. I've remembered another part of the movie that I really like. Madame Giry is telling the managers about the dancers and one of them is perving over Christine and she says "I think of her as a daughter also." I think that was the moment my Miranda fixation started!

She gives depth to her characters. Goes beyond the text on the page. That's what I love about her. You look in the characters eyes and can't help but wonder what her story is. There's something that goes farther then the plot line, if you get what I'm trying to hard to say. She is truly brilliant at what she does.

Yes, that's why I'm always so annoyed when she's only cast as a supporting actress. They should so make a movie about Madame Giry alone. ;D

All Miranda characters should have films of their own.

They should so make a movie about Madame Giry alone. ;D I'd be up for that, as long as they got a different director from the guy that directed Phantom. It was a stroke of brilliance casting Miranda as Madame Giry (I'd never even have considered her for the role), but apart from that, I think another director would have been better. I think Tim Burton would have been a good choice.

I rewatched Phantom again last night with my big brother..and once again I was overwhelmed by Miranda's performance...she says more in a look than most actresses in a monologue. I love the film of 'Phantom' but last night - on about my sixth or seventh watch, it must be - I felt a little frustrated. As you guys have been saying, she just does not have enough screen time. I love the mystery of her character, but what I wouldn't give to see more Mdame Giry... On a plus note, my brother is one of Miranda's greatest critics (although he loves her in Damage, he says she's been 'coasting' lately...wtf???) - and he said he loves her in 'Phantom'!...also he said he's never found her sexy before (how?!) but in that he does. I was glowing with pride!! And then I thrashed him at monopoly ;D Think am going to watch Dance To The Music Of Time now.....AGAIN xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I think Tim Burton would have been a good choice. The perfect director for Phantom, if you ask me, would be Tim Burton, I agree! He does such gothic stuff, and he would make the story so visualy interesting! Brilliant choice of directors! As for a film about Madame Giry alone, that would be very interesting indeed, and we'd maybe even get a more indepth look and the Phantom that way, seeing as the original film is basically just the love story, and doesn't really explore much. I finally got the book, btw, and have started reading it My brother won't watch any of Miranda's films, but he thinks she's hot as Mab. (just a side note there)

They cut a scene from the stage show which Madame Giry has lots to do and has quite a few solo lines to sing. I was so annoyed! I've not watched the movie for a while. I will in the next few weeks, as I'll have loads more time on my hands.

Is that the bit where Raoul is singing 'We have all been blind..' etc. etc. then she actually opens her mouth and the shot cuts away??? That bit is really upsetting!! xxxxxxxxxxx

It sure is, Fran. Basically, the bit involves her warning the managers and Raoul that they can't stop the Phantom, no matter what they do. They ask her to help, and she says that she can't, I think because she doesn't want to betray the Phantom, and Carlotta accuses her of being the Phantom's accomplace. I really wanted them to keep that bit in, I felt that the second half of the movie was a bit disjointed.

I knew it looked as if she had a line there. Did they film it, and then choose to cut it out for time, by any chance?
