Seeing as PoTO was the first movie I ever saw Miranda in, I will always be partial to the character of Madame Giry. I find her a very interesting character. She knows so much and even though she reveals a part of her history with Erik, I still feel as if there is so much more she isn't telling.

I think there was a conversation going on here at one point that ppl thought that Erik and Madame Giry were in love and in cahoots.
Has anyone read the book? I haven't but I would be interested to.

I've read the book. And I'm also pro-Erik/Giry. I do believe they have a romantic history...at least in the movie.

I never thought that... but it's possible!! I always thought that Madam Giry's love was Christine's father because we see Giry with young Christine at her father's bed. And after his dead, Giry took care of his daughter. In fact, would be more probable the Phantom get in love with Madam Giry, who always help him, instead of Christine, who is just a immature girl, comparing with Madam Giry, who is a Lady!
P.S. I love Miranda's misterious and enigmatic air as Madam Giry!

Of course it's probable! And Madame would be a much better match for him than Christine anyway.

All the way through the movie (in the cinema, mind you!), I kept thinking "If Meg weren't blonde, I bet the Phantom was her father". and in the end: tata! blond Phantom.

OHMYGOSH you have lit upon the subject of Meg's paternity!
Ladygiry and I always have Erik being Meg's daddy. Because it just fits. O:

Yep. ;D Meg is Erik's daughter...it's so obvious! I will defend that idea and the E/G pairing till the end of my days! E/G FOREVER MWAHAHA

*is scared by all this shouting*
Hmmm, I've only seen "POTO" once (must rent it again), so I haven't analysed the relationships in depth, but I see what you mean about it being plausible that Mme Giry and Erik (I spelled it right!) would have had some sort of romantic history. Although I see morgause's point as well. Mme Giry always describes Christine as like a daughter to her, and she does take her in very readily.

Yes, I see that point as well. And that is also a possibility. But I just always thought that Madame Giry was merely just really close to the Daaes, like maybe she was Christine's godmother. And as her godmother, it would make sense for Madame to take the girl in after her father's death as she has no other living relatives.

I think Madame Giry is the most interesting character in the story. I've always thought that she cared for the Phantom in a kind of protective motherly or sisterly way. Have any of you seen the stage show? Madame Giry is one very scary woman!
Is the book still in print? I'd love to read it to see what the differences are between the musical/film and the original book.

Yes, the book is still in print. And the differences are many. Madame Giry herself is very different as is Erik.

I personally thought that Madame Giry fell in love with Erik but the love was not returned but she still looked out for him and after him...he was more interested in the talent and youth of Christine...I don't know...I saw a lot of sadness in Miranda's Madame Giry...

Oh, yes, no doubt about it. She's a very sad woman. I see it as either, like you said, the love was unreturned or something happened and their relationship had to end and his eyes then fell on Christine.

I think her sadness is partly because she's getting older. did you notice the melancolic way in which she touches her old pointe shoes before telling Raoul Erik's story? she realises everything isn't the way it used to be anymore. plus I think she's worried about what might happen if Christine refuses Erik.
