Exactly!! (boob-girl LOL) It was never explained, or made obvious, and anyone seeing madame Giry played by the same person as the elder Giry would make that connection anyhoo, you know what I mean?

Indeed. It's due to this "First old version, then young version = same person" Thing.
While the person who did the casting was extremely intelligent in casting Miranda for the part, the people who wrote the script and did the editing/planning obviously weren't as intelligent, also viewable in the lack of screentime (aka every minute of the movie) for Miranda.

They should have had at least one scene with Erik and Madame Giry if they decided to expand on their past together.

Another thing mentioned about it was the relation of Meg to the Phantom (him being her father). It reads that the possibility was discussed, but decided against, because of the song (later cut from the film) in which the Phantom states he's never been as close to anyone as Christine. I agree it;s well written a plot, and very well cast. I just wish it explained a bit more Yes, it's funny too how madame Giry, so loyal to the Phantom is never pictured with him!

That's really weird, I agree.
And this "Erik is Meg's father" thing was quite an obvious possibility. I first thought of it very early in the movie, but then dismissed it due to hair-colour - before seeing that his real hair colour is blonde!

here's a thought that only just occured: Was Meg disscussed as being the daughter of the Phantom in any other POTO productions? Books, other films, so on....?

I have no idea, actually, and I don't really think so. Hm.
Perhaps they just realised what a nice couple Miranda and Gerard would make?
And pray tell; where did you read all that?

I did a google search on madame Giry and found a site of Q&As about Andrew Loyd Webers film. There were really just the two involving Giry. I'm not sure I read them all ;D But I will find it and post the link so you can see.

Thanks!
Puh, some of those questions were kind of dumb, to be frank ...

What's sad is, I didn't notice Minnie Driver sang "learn to be lonely" until I read these questions! Although I knew she didn't sing the Opera bits.

I watched a horribly awful version of POTO yesterday. It was supposed to be a horror-movie, but I have hardly ever laughed so hard or so much. The dead bodies were so fake that there is no way they could have been any faker. Just about any abnormality in sexuality and killing were included. The Phantom was blonde and DID NOT WEAR A MASK! Raoul was even worse-looking than the Schumacher-Raoul. And Christine was played by the director's daugher. Half the movie I kept thinking "What kind of father would let his probably underage daughter play such a role? That's practically soft-porn! Bad softporn, too." Ah, yes, the Julian Sands version. My friend found a video of that in a car boot sale and we watched it and laughed ourselves stupid! Can someone explain to me how this whole thing about Erik being Meg's father came about? Perhaps I'm missing something, but I always saw Madame Giry as a kind of protector to Erik. The way I've always seen it is that Giry does have feelings for him, but they are more maternal rather than anything else. My friend was kind of confused about Madame Giry looking so young in the auction scene. My explanation went along the lines of that it's impossible to make Miranda look old and ugly.

I think the way you describe it is the way it's supposed to be perseved, actually ;D Miranda fans just have a way of linking her romantically or to a leading role. Don't know why?? But I'm an obvious guilty party to it
