So on the television the other day they showed, for my own personal enjoyment, the movie Spider. I quite loved it, along with Ralph Fiennes' character. It's hard to say how, but it just was really really good. And of course I loved Miranda as the mum but couldn't help but dispise her as Yvonne, or as Mrs. Wilkinson. The art in the filmmaking itself - just - lovely.
Anyone else see this film and wish to comment?

Ooo, I really like this movie. Miranda is excellent in it! But can you sort of explain it to me, because when I saw it I was really tired etc, and didn't really get the plot. I mean I might seem stupid but I just didn't get it.

Oh, I don't blame you for not getting it! It took me a while and a good internet search to finally get the gist of it. Well, from what I understand, *SPOILER WARNING* Pretty much the entire movie is shot from the character Spider's point of view. He is either schitzophrenic or psycopathic, depending on which interpretation you read. We meet him as he is released from a mental heath hospital, and he is checking into a halfway house near a gas plant. Anyways, he meets the residents etc, and in his room he reminisces about his childhood. This is shown to the audience (as perhaps in his mind) as him literally walking up to his childhood home, and seeing a conversation he remembers with his dear, lovely mummie Miranda. When he is sent to the bar to pick up dad, the bargirl who flashes him gets etched in his unstable mind as the quintessential 'whore,' or 'sexualized woman.' His mum is nothing like that at all. Mums aren't supposed to be sexualized. But more and more as mum and dad hang out, Spider splits her into two people - Lovely dear mummie and the Sexual woman. They can't be the same person! Eventually, in his mind, she is a totally different person, and his dad and her must have conspired to kill his mum and bury her in the allotments. It's the only conclusion. After a while of this, he conspires to kill the vile woman, and does so with the spider-web-attached-to-the-gas-stove contraption (thus explaining his obsession with gas). Only after that evil imposter is dead and dragged out on the street by his dad does the 33 year old Spider recall that it really was his mother that he killed. This catalysts the regression of the halfway house manager to her normal self from Spider's view and returns him to psychosis. That's the best I took out of it. Along with intense amounts of imagery, including constant 'peices put together' eg the broken window, the puzzle, Spider's memory... And the fact that the entire movie is shot from Spider's point of view - we see what a schitzophrenic mind sees and nothing more. There is also a large Oedipus Rex influence noted.

I love Spider! Miranda is absolutely sublime! Nobody else could make that three characters. It's a shame that she didn't win the award for best actress in Cannes!

she didn't?
And did anyone notice that after the scene under the bridge, it was Spider turning away from Yvonne, not his father? And why did Mrs Wilkinson turn into Yvonne?

I think by that point, there isn't much logic to it! Yvonne, to him, is the ultimate evil and Mrs Wilkinson, through being strict and unpleasant then becomes Yvonne too. Yvonne is his ultimate enemy I guess.
Has anyone read the book? Probably makes the whole thing much clearer.
I love this film. It's so...different...so beautiful in a horrific kind of way. Ralph Fiennes and Miranda and Gabriel Byrne are just....breathtaking... in my opinion.
But Miranda steals it. She is so grotesque...but so accurate in her portayal of Yvonne. I would defy anyone who isn't a diehard fan to recognise her as the same woman playing Mrs Clegg. My brother has the biggest crush on Miranda and he didn't realise til I told him that she was Yvonne!!

Yeah, everyone says it's difficult to see. Even if you know, it's not very obvious. But then, if you watch a new Miranda movie without having seen pictures before, it's always hard to recognise her right away. You have to keep looking out for the character that is played best.

Alright Plummer!
This movie reminds me why I want to be an actress- I wonder if Miranda actcally saw it as a challage? This would be the kinda role I would love to put my heart and soul into I wonder if Miranda found it that hard.
I love the scene where she trys to find the keys- so actually quite intermite, searching his body and talking into his face,
Did Miranda win any awards for this??

Unfornateky, she was nominated for several awards, including in Cannes but she didn't win... It's a shame really... I read somewhere that the director David Cronenberg was furious because of it, he really wanted an award for Miranda!
So, Incapability, do you want company to go after who made this??

Does anybody else have alternative theories for what happened in this film, as opposed to the way it was 'explained' by Spider's memories at the end?
I think it's fascinating that there could be so many different explanations for it, because it's all a construction inside his head anyway.
