It has been the haunting backdrop of a horror film, set the scene for the Da Vinci Code and has been the fictional home of a little lord.
Now Belvoir Castle is in the movies again - this time providing a stately home in a story about the young Queen Victoria.
Produced by legendary director Martin Scorsese, the film will chronicle the early years of the queen's reign, as well as her rise to power and her marriage to Prince Albert.
The interior of the building will be used as a double for Windsor Castle during the shoot, including the highly-decorated Elizabeth Salon.
The tourist attraction will be closed to the public for ten days from this Sunday to allow the cast and crew to do their work.
Belvoir Castle spokeswoman Jane Pruden said the production of the movie at the site could only be good news for the area.
She said: "We are only open to the public on Sundays, so it is a shame we have to close for two of them.
"But having the movie shoot here is really good news for Belvoir.
"We've had many productions here over the years, with the most famous being Little Lord Fauntleroy.
"But each helps put the castle on the map and help to boost tourism here."
Victoria will be played by British actress Emily Blunt, who shot to fame in The Devil Wears Prada, while Paul Bettany, from The Da Vinci Code will take on the role of Lord Melbourne.
Prince Albert will be played by Rupert Friend, last seen on the big screen in Pride and Prejudice.
Thomas Kretschmann, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, Mark Strong, Michael Maloney and Julian Glover also star in the movie, called The Young Victoria, which is due to be released next year.
Simon Gribbon, from Leicester Shire Promotions, said attracting movies brings in tourists.
"The film tourism market is increasingly prevalent," he said.
"Films such as The Da Vinci Code were very successful and brought many international visitors to Belvoir Castle and to Lincoln Cathedral, where part of the movie was filmed. Films more based on history and heritage have resonance with visitors, so this movie should be a winner."
The gothic castle, which overlooks the Vale of Belvoir, has drawn many Hollywood location scouts in the past.
Most recently, it doubled as an Italian Papal retreat in the big-budget adaptation of Dan Brown's bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code, which also starred Paul Bettany as a murderous monk.
Catherine Zeta Jones and Liam Neeson were also on location for a remake of horror movie The Haunting, while the movie Little Lord Fauntleroy, starring Sir Alec Guinness, was filmed at Belvoir Castle in 1980.
