I was sent a press release today from the WSPA about Miranda's support for their 'Not In My Cuppa' campaign against battery-farmed milk. There is an accompanying photo that I have requested, and when I have it I will put it up on the website. For people here, the entire press release follows : -

Made in Dagenham actress says no to Britain’s first mega-dairy
Made in Dagenham actress and one of this year’s nominees for Best Supporting Actress, Miranda Richardson, has lent her support to the Not in my Cuppa campaign to stop factory milk from battery cows ending up in the nation’s favourite drink.
Miranda, who played the role of government minister Barbara Castle in the film about women battling for equal pay in the 1960s, feels strongly that intensive dairy farming is the wrong way forward for the UK.
Miranda says “This goes against everything that has been fought for and won in terms of quality of existence, whether animal or human. It is cruel and unnatural and there are always, always consequences - not least for the planet.
She joins a number of famous voices including Jenny Seagrove and Andrew Sachs who have been speaking out on behalf of the World Society for the Protection of Animals’ campaign against allowing plans for the UK’s first mega-dairy in Nocton, Lincolnshire to go ahead.
Nocton Dairies want to build an industrial dairy operation that will house 3,770 cows in 22 acres of indoor sheds stretching the length of seven football pitches. The developers admit their objective is to ultimately run a massive 8,100 cow factory at Nocton. Each animal would be expected to yield 10,000 litres of milk per year which is 43% higher than the current national average. North Kesteven District Council is scheduled to announce their decision in March.
“We need less, not more greed, pollution, waste and health-risk elements to our diet. We are capable of so much, so let's EVOLVE”, adds Miranda.
Not in my Cuppa is warning that giant mega-dairies are rife with potentially damaging consequences for animal welfare, the environment, our countryside and our farmers.
According to a recent Ipsos MORI survey commissioned by WSPA, although 90% of adults across Great Britain buy milk at least once a week, a staggering 61% say they would never buy milk produced in large-scale indoor dairy sheds. Yet if the Nocton Dairies application is approved in the next few months, consumers won’t know if the milk their drinking comes from the mega-dairy or not.
Public support is needed to stop this planning application. If you want to follow in the Miranda’s footsteps visit www.notinmycuppa.com/takepart to join in.

About Not in my Cuppa http://www.notinmycuppa.com:
Not in my Cuppa is the World Society for the Protection of Animals' campaign against allowing intensive US-style dairy farming to spread in Britain. WSPA UK wants to stop Nocton Dairies from going ahead - if this intensive 'mega dairy' is built, it will open the floodgates for more. America is now waking up to the full horror of what intensive farming has done to the cows, the environment, people's livelihoods, human health and the countryside. WSPA UK strongly believes there is an alternative, more positive future for the UK dairy farming industry, which places good animal welfare at its heart, but can still work for farmers and consumers alike.
