I accidently came across this website and found this piece of interesting information about the name Miranda. Thought I might as well share it in case you hadn't seen it Categories: Shakespeare, American, English, Latin Used in: English speaking countries (in Sweden as well, might I add, although it's very rare) Additional info: Miranda was created by Shakespeare for his play "The Tempest" from the feminine form of the Latin gerundive 'mirandus' (admirable, lovely), from the verb 'mirari' (to wonder at, to admire). This gives the meaning "she who must be admired". Miranda is also the name of one of the satellites of Uranus. Though Uranus has 27 known satellites, five are considered major. Miranda is the smallest of these major satellites. The name is borne by actress Miranda Richardson, performance artist Miranda July, actress Miranda Otto and supermodel Miranda Kerr. In the USA, the "Miranda Rights" are read when somebody is arrested, telling them that they have the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney. This was named after Ernesto Miranda, who made a confession without being given a warning.

Dear Mary (again), Thank you for your research on the name Miranda. I knew the Shakespearean derivation but not the Latin one. How could the name Not mean "She who must be admired" ? Also, as an American, I was aware of the "Miranda rights" aspect of the name. May all of us be worthy of respect and admiration. May Miranda Richardsons' virtues be reflected in us all. Todd
