I was watching PoTO for about the tenth billion time and this came to me and I felt I had to write it. Forgive me if it is not as polished as some of my others:
“She left me, Annie, she left me.”
Antoinette kept him close, cradling him as his head rested on her bosom. “Shh, Erik,” she soothed as she rubbed his back, her heart breaking for him.
“She left me,” Erik whimpered pitifully, tears rolling down his face.
“Shh,” she repeated as she tenderly wiped away his tears.
Suddenly he jerked back away from her and stood up, staring down at her coldly. “She left me just like you did,” Erik hissed, his sorrow transforming into anger as it was wont to do. “Just like you did all those years ago.”
Antoinette looked up at him in silence for a moment before sighing and turning her head away. “We’ve gone through this before, Erik,” she murmured quietly.
“Have we now? I do not recall.”
She was silent, still not meeting his eyes.
“You women are all alike!” He snarled, his eyes burning with passionate fury. “Traitorous, heartless wretches! You put on an act of kindness and virtue, wrapping others around your finger. Then what do you do? You betray them!”
“Stop this, Erik,” Antoinette ordered quietly.
“Why, because the truth is too much to bear?”
“I’ve never betrayed you willingly,” she whispered.
He sneered, “Oh no? Then what do you call leading Monsieur Vicomte down here, hmm? Assisting him in taking away Christine? You, my dear, are a traitor! A back-stabbing, despicable, selfish-“
“Enough!” She snapped and she was on her feet in a flash, her eyes burning into him like the hottest blue fire. “This opera house was nearly burned to the ground because of your lustful desires and you have the nerve to call me selfish?”
Erik said not a word, but rage was seething silently within him at her words.
“After all I’ve done for you!” Antoinette hissed. “I brought you here, protected you and kept your secret for all these years! And this is how you repay me, Erik? By destroying my home and putting me out of a job?”
“Oh, don’t play the martyr, Antoinette. It isn’t becoming.”
“Nor is throwing a tantrum like a spoiled child when you cannot get what you want!” She snapped in reply. “That is what this entire thing was: a tantrum! And because little Erik couldn’t have what he wanted he makes everyone else suffer-“
But she was cut off as Erik slapped her sharply across the face, knocking her roughly to the ground. “Hold your tongue, woman!” He snarled. “Before I silence it permanently!”
Antoinette stared up at him in silence, one hand clutching at her face and it was clear that the delicate features were already starting to bruise.
He turned away so that his back was to her, “Get out.”
“Erik…”
“I said out! Unless you’d prefer to die.”
“What has happened to you, Erik?” She murmured sadly as she slowly rose to her feet. “What has happened to the boy I knew? To the young man I loved?”
“Just go.”
But Antoinette didn’t leave, she only slowly moved towards him. “I loved you once, Erik,” she whispered as she came up behind him, “I truly did…and I do not believe I ever truly stopped.”
She moved so that she was in front of him and gazed up into his eyes. “Let my try to restore that time,” she murmured as she reached up to caress his face. “Let me love you again, that’s all I ask.”
Erik turned his head away and said nothing. Antoinette gently touched his jaw, making him meet her eyes. “I beg of you,” she pleaded in a whisper, “just let me love you in the way Christine could not. If you do, I promise I’ll never hurt you again.”
He stared down at her for a moment before removing her hand from his face. “I cannot allow you to make a promise you won’t keep,” he murmured. “I am not worthy of such a promise nor am I worthy of such a love.”
She opened her mouth to protest but he only silenced her with a soft and tender kiss. It only lasted a moment and Erik pulled back, gazing down into her eyes once more. “This is goodbye, Annie,” he murmured, caressing her face. “This is goodbye.”
End.
