Prayers and Useless Pity (The Phantom of the Opera, T/PG-13, Work in Progress
Prologue Have you ever teetered on the brink, lingered in that one moment between horror and pity, wanted to cry out but no sound escaped your lips? I have. I wanted to scream. I wanted to shriek in terror as the other girls did. I wanted to clutch at the nearest person for I was swaying dangerously on my feet. I thought I might faint. I made no sound. I remained silent not out of pity, not out of some twisted empathy that drew me to the little boy being beaten in the cage. I kept my mouth firmly closed because I knew that if I did I would surely join in the cacophony of terrified cries. He likes to think that I did not scream because I cared. I did, I still do. But I was just a girl then, known for nothing more than a talent for my art and an overly quiet nature. What did I, a sheltered creature who knew nothing beyond the walls of the Opera Populaire, know of sympathy, of pain? I was afraid of him, a mere boy of ten years. I watched him kill a man for the first time. Twist the thick, heavy rope about his spindly fingers and loop his arms about his keeper, to jerk back, intent to murder. I wept bitterly for many nights afterward because I knew that the boy who still could have retained some shred of humanity had utterly lost himself with that man’s final, guttural cry. I took his hand in mine. The hand of a murderer. I tried not to shudder. I hid him from them. I did what any human would do. And when he couldn’t hear me, I screamed.

This is great! I like the way you've given her a realistic reaction to Eric- she was only a child at the time, and these thoughts are certainly probably what she would have thought.

Thanks, Himiko! And it's 'Erik'- if you're around more rabid fans than I, they shall mob you with Punjab lassos if you call him 'Eric.' ;B Your review is appreciated!

Ah, spelling error duly noted- bear in mind I have only seen the film once! And nobody can mob me- I am the Queen of Mobs! *evil laugh*

They follow no ruler. :B If you get it wrong, they don't care that you're the most Almighty Queen of Angry Mobs. In their eyes, you've comitted blasphemy and must be dealt with accordingly.

Yes, there are indeed people who are even more protetive of something than I am of Miranda.

Ah, and all this because of a spelling...

well, sometimes spelling is quite important. you should not fall into some kind of infantile netspeak stuff just because you're online. that's annoying and impolite. shows you don't take the time to write a proper sentence.

That's true- mind you, netspeak is not the most infantile speech around- that dubious honour has to go to "txtspk" (text speak). "C U L8R" being one of the most common. Sometimes it takes me hours just to try and translate text messages from my friends!
BTW, since we are on a thread of lovely fanfiction, when can we hope to see the next part of your Harry Potter/Merlin crossovers (I believe both of you have written one)! And the next part of this? *pleading face* ;D

Prayers and Useless Pity is wavering. The next part might not come for a bit.
AND I AM SLAVING AWAY OVER HP/M CROSSOVER. GRAH. My style of writing has actually changed quite a bit since I wrote the first chapter so if it looks wonky don't blame me. This chapter is going to include lots of things that is either from the Encyclopedia Mythica or made off of the top of my head (such as the factor in genetic makeup that allows wizardry to be performed). But the most prominent part is going to be the cry of the bean-sidhe, aka banshee which Mab performs during the final battle with Merlin. You'll see what I mean when the chapter is done. ;3
