I just rewatched this and even though Miranda's role is cut to the bones (and I mean really slim) she is of course incredible and pulls off every scene with her brillance. One thing that always bothered me though was when Jim was looking at her character. At first, I just thought "oh, he misses his mom". But then it cuts to that night when her and her husband are being somewhat intimate and he's looking! I'm like "ok... what is this kids problem?" (Besides being in a POW camp, I'm referring to his mental state). But nonetheless, Miranda is in it and that's all the incentive I need to see this movie-even if it does cause me to shed a few tears...

I think it really brings into focus the fact that he's experiencing his adolescence in a POW camp, and demonstrates how far removed from a normal teenage experience that is. The second time I watched it I noticed that Mrs Victor is really the only sexualised woman in the whole film, and not only is she old enough to be his mother, she's also weak and disease-ridden. I think the intention there is to highlight how different his life is to normal adolescent fantasy - we see other, younger women in the background, but he doesn't fixate on any of them. It could possibly be Freudian, in that he is missing his mother as well and his normal development has been stunted/affected by the violent wrenching away from normal life, so he's come to understand yearning for a maternal figure and sexual desire as the same thing. But really I think it's just used to emphasise how extreme and confusing growing up in a place like that would be.

Hm...Never looked at that way. But then again, I'm the "brawn" of the family-or was, fireman. My brother is "brain"-trying to be psych. professor. Ok. I'll buy it. So why doesn't Mr. Victor beat the daylights out of him when he realizes Jim's been watching something "forbidden" if you will (remember, this is the forties)

he was distracted by something going on outside, wasn't he? A plane going by or something like that? I got this film on dvd not to long ago. Was disapointed in so little Miranda, but the film it's self found my interest anyway. as for that scene, I had just figured he was a horny little boy coming into adolensence and she was the only women he had any real contact with, I don't really give things much thought I guess ;D

Christian Bale might have grown up to be rather sexy, but everytime I see him I'm reminded of how annoying he was in this movie.

Yeah, re: Mr victor not beating him up - that scene was interrupted by the bombing of the Shanghai docks, which I think would have been distracting enough for him to get away with it.
He does move into the men's camp after that scene, though, doesn't he?

Yes I think he does. He looks like he would of beaten Jim if the planes and such haden't come over. He looked furious in that one picture

At last I have an answer:
In the book, Jim is very attracted to Mrs Victor. LOL it also states that Jim quite often received an erection in her presence and often disguised this by claiming it was a potato stuffed down his pants.
Also, when Jim returns to the camp (in the book) he sleeps in Mrs Victors bed, rather than his own
Well there we go. Mystery solved.
