Set near the end of 1899, as a new century is due to arrive and many people struggle to keep up with an era in flux, this drama follows the goings-on at a medical clinic operated by Professor Mandy (Charles Dance). Mandy is conservative and set in his ways, while his top student and right-hand man Dr. Reisner (Clive Owen) is open-minded and takes a more progressive approach; Reisner is willing to hire women and blacks and will consider new treatment methods that Mandy won't permit. A disagreement between Mandy and Reisner regarding the use of insulin -- then a new drug -- leads to the younger man's suspension; :)Reisner then turns to Clara (Miranda Richardson) , a free-thinking young woman working at the clinic, who agrees to help Reisner with his research on the drug. Soon they become lovers as well as lab partners, but they also have disagreements of their own regarding medical ethics.

"CENTURY"Century (1993)
Plot Summary
Paul Reisner, a young doctor, becomes a researcher in a prestigious medical institute. He feels he has a chance to be part of a movement of unending progress in science and civilization. Then he begins to discover the dark side of the institute, which foreshadows the dark side of the 20th century.
SYPNOSIS:Personal archive
1899, London: a time of political and social foment, when longstanding ethnic and racial prejudices co-existed with the first major stirrings of feminism; a time of great scientific discoveries, mistakes -- and confusion.
Paul Reisner, a Jewish doctor, finds himself squarely in the middle of all these rapid changes. The victim of anti-semitism in the medical school where he trains, he gratefully accepts the attention and affection of Mandry, one of the institute's major professors. But when his adored mentor refuses even to look at some important research conducted by one of Paul's friends, Paul begins to doubt the validity of Mandry's opinions.
And when he learns about some of Mandry's experiments, Paul realizes he has to do something to stop him -- or some innocent people might die.
