Ok, carrying on that conversation, Mal!!!
I'm so so happy you love Isabelle!!
Yes, 'La Pianiste' is an amazing film...I remember I couldn't talk for a long time after seeing it, it just numbed me...Her performance is out of this world. I love '8 Femmes' too!! One of my absolute favourite films! That's where I first discovered her. I'm trying to find all of her movies, I think I've only seen about five so far They are very hard to find over here!
I shall try and find the one you recommend, not sure how successful I'll be (when you ask where the 'world cinema' section is, they look at you like an alien!!! )
I haven't seen Vanessa in anything other than 'La Fille Sur La Pont'...but her performance in that moved me so much...such a beautiful, joyful film. I love her music too
Yesssss come to jolly old Portsmouth!! Whereabouts do you come to in the South?

he he a topic for us.... yes, the pianist atonished me. I was very chocked the first time I watched it and I couldn't sleep during the following night. It disturbed me a lot but I found it so interesting that I bought the DVD and I watched it again. It's a very clever movie in a psychological and emotive way. It's a very sad movie too, which shows the fragility of the human mind and subconscious. Scary. If you want I can help you to find her movies, I can check on amazon.fr wich DVDs have english subtitles and tell you. Or I can check in french shops if you want. Yep, 8 femmes is an excellent movie, very different than the other french movies we can see at cinema. I especially like Augustine because she's funny and touching in a same time. Here is the link of a picture I like: a69.g.akamai.net/n/69/10688/v1/img5.allocine.fr/acmedia/medias/nmedia/00/02/39/97/femmes2.jpgFor 'Jeux Interdits' (this fab movie I told you about and which can be translated as 'forbidden games') I know a DVD which has definitivelly the english subtitles. It's the one I bought. Do you want more details, or perhaps a link? I havn't seen 'La jeune fille sur le pont' but I wanted to watch it, because I think it refers to a Camus'book I like ('La Chute'). But it's just a suposition. Can you tell me more abt it? In fact I lived in south england this year (Bristol) to do my Masters. I came back in south of France 3 days ago but I would like to spend few more months in England soon. I'll pass a theatre test in september to enrol the Drama School of Marseille. If I'm successful I won't be abble to spend more than one month in England, but If I fail (that I don't wish) I will be abble to spend several month in your beautiful country. I'll let you know. You will be very welcome in Bristol.

Well, I've seen La Huppert in "Une affair des femmes", which I loved. Also "Un long dimanche de fianceilles" (I know I forgot some accents there, I just know it!), which was fuckin' brilliant, and of course Madame Bovary, which is so INCREDIBLE in my opinion.

yes, I saw Madame Bovary, but though I think it's quite good I must admit that I'm not fond of it. The matter is that I can't stand the Flaubert's book. So it doesn't help....

Mal, good luck with the theatre school! Keep us updated Yes a link would be fab if you have one for 'Jeux Interdits'? Ooh all these Isabelle films you mention, Incapa that i haven't seen!! I've just seen 'Ma Mere' (has anyone seen that one? would love to hear others opinions!), 'Merci Pour Le Chocolat', 'I Heart Huckabees' (English lang film) and the two we mentioned before. She just has this raw danger, this incredibly scary sexuality in all of them, don't you think? And it seems that she can use this in a comic way or in an amazingly intense way. She just amazes me. Did you know she did a Sarah Kane play in Germany? (I think it was Germany anyway) Sounded fascinating. Don't know if you've heard of Sarah Kane but she's a very interesting playwright. Her stuff is really on the edge, really disturbing. Just Isabelle's kind of thing! I love how she (Isabelle) pushes things to the limit to present truth and not have everything sugar coated. I love that pic too!! Oh Augustine is one of my fave characters ever! I sit there and cry with laughter, but she is so poignant too at the same time. 'Girl On The Bridge': I haven't heard of the book you mention, but I can tell you about it. I really recommend it. It is the most beautiful film I have ever seen. Made with such care and has such a big heart. Do you know the story? I literally don't know how to describe it apart from it makes you believe in love....it's visually stunning too. xxxxxxxxxxx

Just found this topic which I remembered starting a long while ago...perhaps we can carry on here, Avalon?! I've never heard of Patricia Kaas or Arielle Dombasle, I must admit...what have they been in? My favourite French actresses are Isa, obviously, Emmanuelle Beart, Vanessa Paradis, Marian Cotillard, Audrey Tatou and Juliette Binoche (although I'm not convinced by her in Damage...) Back to Isabelle- I love Merci Pour Le Chocolat too! Extraordinary film...most recently seen her in 'Gabrielle'...have you seen that? It's an odd one, but her performance is like a drawing...if that makes sense. I'm dying to see Madame Bovary. She's hard to get hold of on film over here! Arggghhhh I could actually talk French films and actresses all night, so I shall stop for now (want to go watch a film that started ten minutes ago!)...I will add you on msn, but as I tell everyone, I really hardly ever go on there....will add you as an lj friend too? Your lj looks fab, by the way! Gorgeous! Have you seen Garbo in 'Grand Hotel'? I'm currently in the musical of it! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
