I do respect other people's opinions, but I really can't see what's wrong with using "lol". It's the internet world. Most young people use it frequently everywhere on the web.

Dear Young Ladies: Alright, you're going to continue using LOL. Be that way - especially since "most young people use it...", as one of you said. That's a good reason - young people Do It !!! What can I say to that except : "LOL." If you "wanna" use "lol" then no one can deny your right to misuse our language and using the internet as your excuse. TBFU Too Bad For You.

We certainly will. There are rules on this board about using netspeak to the extent of 'typin lyk dis', because none of us here want to see the English language butchered. But those of us who've been hanging around on internet forums for a long time know how easy it is to offend people on the internet, and how difficult it can be to pick up tone in people's words. Things like smilies and the use of 'lol' are less about the fact that one is laughing aloud or crying or really blowing a kiss than they are indicators of emotion. A well-placed smilie or 'lol' can make sure that the person you'rr talling to knows that what you're saying is intended to be light-hearted, and can save all sorts of trouble with misinterpretation.

God, I hope she does do it! And I wish I could be there if she did! Can I just ditto that? ;D Ohwell, as I said, it would be great. I can but keep my fingers crossed. As for the whole "lol" thing - my answers is "Yes!", I do laugh out loud, a lot, and I do get weirded out looks at times because of it (and also get head patted a lot). I do see your point about overusing it, though. Still, I'll be happy if that's the only internet speech abbreviation that gets used frequently.

I do that, too. It's not so bad when I'm in my room, but I've burst out laughing in the uni cafeteria and in Starbucks before, which is a bit awkward. not half as bad as writing porn in public and realising someone is looking over your shoulder, though >.>
