SINGAPORE -- Twenty-two films from 18 countries have been selected for the inaugural Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival Awards, organizers said in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
------The nominees include Chris Bowman's dork comedy "American Fork" (U.S., 2007); Canadian director Robert Favreau's "Sunday in Kigali," a love story set against rising ethnic tension in Rwanda; and Jag Mundhra's "Provoked" (U.K., 2006), starring Aishwarya Rai and Miranda Richardson in the true story of a battered wife who fought back, first against her husband and then against the system.
The Asian films competing in the Best Asian Film category include China's "One Summer With You." Director Xie Dong's second film, "One Summer With You" is billed as a "bittersweet love story of a girl's struggle to go to a university and the undelivered acceptance letter kept from her by a young, smitten postman."
Winners of Perdana Awards in five categories will be announced at a ceremony Dec. 2 in Kuala Lumpur. The categories are best Asian film, best African film, best European film, best North American film and best South American film.
The Best Overall Film Award will be given to one of the winners of the five Perdana Awards.
The awards are organized by Malaysia's National Film Development Corp. and Kuala Lumpur International Film Festival, which runs Nov. 28-Dec. 2.
Organizers said the awards would go to films that "best encapsulate the value of KLIFF's theme 'Celebrating Cultural Diversity.' "
