Thanks. ;D Tryouts aren't till the end of the year, but after being off for almost a year I've been getting back into my stretching and everything already just to prepare.

No I don't. I didn't make it as a freshman because they said that maybe I just needed to give myself one more year to mature. Then this last year I just totally messed up because this other girl who had absolutely no idea what she was doing was put in front of me, and for some reason I just couldn't help but watch how awful she was. That kind of threw me off, so I didn't make it again. It's really difficult to make, even some of the best dancers from my dance studio still haven't made it either. But, then again, they all dance with expressions like they've just seen a ghost and a lot of the scoring has to do with emotions.

Mel, the facial expression can be very important, as you already said, because the judges will like you better if they think you're having fun (which is not always the case while you're being judged). I know as dressage judge who says he's willing to overlook some minor faults if the rider is smiling nicely, because otherwise he might think he/she's been forced to ride. and now the demanding parents are standing at the edge of the prep-square and shout "smile! riding is FUN, remember that!" ok, riding IS fun, but sometimes it's just not going as you want it to, and then you certainly don't feel like smiling. but keep having fun!

I know, I have a feeling my emotions are the only things that brought me back for callbacks two years ago. I also know the feeling of people yelling at you to smile from the side, but usually it was the director of the program (I hated her because she hated me) and I usually didn't like to listen to her. But I did it anyways just to make myself look a bit better. One of the major problems though is that I don't have a very big smile (my mouth is kind of tight-you should have seen them yanking on me to get my braces in! OUCH!). Plus, all of the metal in my mouth makes it look even smaller, so I just try my hardest and hope for the best. And then still get yelled at.
