OK, I've now heard several people say they like Nightwish and other bands of gothic metal prettiness, so I have been clever and created a thread. Yay me.
Anyways, has anyone on here bought or seen the "End of an Era" DVD? I purchased it (for £20! *has miserly heart failure*). Loved the concert (though I was annoyed by the absence of End of All Hope), especially the "Phantom of the Opera" cover. I saw the film a couple of weeks before I bought my first Nightwish album (Century Child), and I thought the cover was great- though Tarja has said that it was one of her weaker vocal performances- but when I saw the DVD of them performing it live, I was in shock! Every time I listen to it, it sends happy shivers down my spine. Knocked seven bells out of the movie version, IMO (OK, so I'm slightly biased in the favour of metal, and Marco Hietala and Gerard Butler have completely different singing styles, but I felt that Emmy Rossum sounded weaker on this song when compared to some of the later songs from the film).
Anyway, what does everyone else think? And, BTW, what's everyone else's favourite Nightwish song/album (if any)?

I like lots of Nightwish songs but I think that my fav are Nemo, I wish I had an Angel, The End of All Hope, The Beauty and the Beast.
I am not fond of metal but I do love some bands whose the singer is a woman with a lyric voice and which use a symphonic orchestra. My favorite band is Epica. I just LOVE it. Do you like it?
I like several gothic bands too, like Leave's eyes, Midnattsol, Within Temptation, Nightwish of course, sins of thy beloved, Penumbra, etc I like few songs of Cradle of Filth (which is usually too trash for me) like Nymphetamine Fix (absolutely excellent) and Gothic Romance. The band Rhapsody is awsome I think, even if I'm not fond of the voice of the singer. Each album is original from the previous one, the music is beautiful and clever, especially in the last albums because it's played on real instruments. Lacrimosa has got some very good songs too, unfortunatelly I don't understand the songs sung in German.

End of All Hope! Truly, you have most excellent tastes in music! That is my favourite song, too. I love "Century Child". Best NM album there is. Don't get me wrong, I liked "Once", too, but although the massive orchestral nature of the album was lovely, I preferred the more eerie, gothic, and (occasionally) more subtle songs on "Century Child", overall. Also, "Beauty of the Beast"... WOW! I only wish they had played "EoAH" and "BotB" live on End of An Era.
I like Epica, too. I only have one album- Consign to Oblivion. "The Last Crusade" my favourite song of theirs. Anyone know what the Latin lyrics translate as? I also like Leaves' Eyes, Within Temptation, Rhapsody, etc. I've never come across any Midnattsol songs, though I'd like to hear them. Don't suppose you know any links I could find some on? As my guilty pleasure, I love some of Lordi's songs, too. I have "Devil is a Loser" permanently stuck in my head these days.
PS: I was on the nightwish website, and in Tuomas's profile, it lists Sleepy Hollow as one of his favourite films! The man has good taste!

Yay Tuomas! Any news about Nightwish finding a new singer yet? I know they're currently in studio, ut they don't seem to have a singer yet.
My music taste is quite slim. I love, of course, Nightwish, and I own every single album of them. Otherwise, I like Metallica, Blind Guardian, In Extremo and Schandmaul, and I am about to have a closer look at Apocalyptica.

No news as yet of the new singer. Of course, they might have found her and not announced it yet. Most likely they'll record the instrumental stuff now, and have the new singer record the vocals later and add them.
Should be interesting to see how the new singer copes. Unlike Tarja who gradually became famous with the rest of the band, the new vocalist will have to come from relative obscurity (unless they snag a famous vocalist like Sharon den Adel, etc. somehow) into one of the most famous female-fronted metal bands on the planet.

Yeah, I guess that should be pretty scary. And it's tricky. If they take someone unknown, she'll always be compard to Tarja. If they take someone from another band, that has perhaps a different style, that might lead to nasty comparisons as well. In any case, it will be hard for her to live up to the expectations.

True- from my occasional observations of the Nightwish forum, it would seem there is a mix of opinions- some people want a classical singer who'll be able to sing in the old "operatic" style that Tarja used to sing in pre-CC, some want a singer who'll sing just like Tarja on the later albums, some want a singer with a totally different style of voice to Tarja, and some who think no singer will ever compare to Tarja. Also, there are some people who want to see the band continue in the direction they started in with "Once", some who want a return to the style of the older albums music-wise, and some who want a complete change of direction. As for other famous singers, I've seen several possibilities discussed on various boards as Tarja-replacements, and most people are of the opinion that they would not be able to sing the old Nightwish songs, just as Tarja would sound odd performing their songs. 'Tis most confusing. Whatever happens, someone will criticise it.

How cute!!!!!!
Well, I like Once very much, but I also like the Operatic style. I think a healthy mix should do the trick. And I agree that they shouldn't try and re-record the old songs, they should avoid a comparison that open.

Yes- like "Century Child"- sort of. I agree, they shouldn't remake old songs, as that often leads to disaster, and old fans will probably get annoyed at it. I wouldn't have minded seeing remakes of a couple of the songs off "Angels Fall First", but I would rather that was done with the original line-up than with a new singer. Also, it probably wouldn't work as Marco's voice is too harsh for songs like "The Carpenter", "Beauty and the Beast", etc. and Tuomas, bless him, can't sing. So they should just do some new songs. They should do a "Merlin"-themed album! That would be lovely.
Yes, Nightwish can do a Merlin- themed concept album, and Tarja can do a duet with Lordi! Yes, I have very demented daydreams.

I never said these before but also like Nightwish very much! I simply love Tarja's voice... its a piety that she leaved the band...

Yes, Tarja being fired has caused many a fan to weep. Her voice is damn gorgeous (as is she), and it worked so well with the songs.
BTW, has anyone heard that Tarja and a Finnish tenor are taking part in something called the Savonlinna Concert in Finland, and several of the songs they are playing are "Nightwish" songs?! Tarja will sing "Angels Fall First", the tenor (can't remember name) will do "Two For Tragedy", they will both sing "Beauty of the Beast" (and "Phantom of the Opera" which isn't strictly a Nightwish song, but was covered by them), and the orchestra accompanying them will play "Moondance". I really wish I was Finnish- I would cheerfully kill to see BotB live- but I was amazed that those songs were chosen considering the current relations between Tarja and Tuomas (the writer of the songs).
Minkaro, your pretty metallic thoughts are appreciated. If you would lend me your pretty Sonata Artica CD so that I may listen to it, I could speak with you more on the subject *hint hint*
