FILMING is underway in Ryedale on a new BBC adaption of JB Priestley’s classic play An Inspector Calls.
Stars of the drama are expected to be at Scampston Hall for the next month before the production team moves to various locations in Malton, including the former Green Man Hotel in Market Place.
An Inspector Calls will be shown on BBC 1 later this year.
David Thewlis, who appeared in Harry Potter, will play the Inspector, with Ken Stott, star of Rebus, playing Arthur Birling and Miranda Richardson seen recently in Mapp and Lucia, will play his wife, Sybil.
Anne Ainsley, from Scampston Hall, said the crew was expected to be there for about a month.
“Scampston Hall fits in well for the period of the drama and most of the filming has been inside the hall itself,” she said.
“It is very exciting and also very good for the area in general to come under the spotlight.”
An Inspector Calls is a mysterious detective thriller, set in 1912 and written by English dramatist JB Priestley.
Following the suicide of a young woman from the local town, an inspector calls unexpectedly to interrogate the wealthy Birling family.
As their world unravels, each member of the family is revealed to have unwittingly played a part in her demise.
Set at a time when society was transforming and women’s lives were about to change forever, An Inspector Calls is considered to be one of the classics of 20th century theatre.
Thewlis said: “An Inspector Calls is a British classic and I am thrilled to be working on this beautiful screen adaptation with Aisling Walsh.”
Greg Brenman, managing director and executive producer of Drama Republic, said: “It’s an incredible honour to be working with such a dream cast and director on this timeless classic, revered by generations all over the world.”
Lucy Richer, commissioning editor for BBC drama, said: “The mysterious and elusive Inspector Goole has fascinated audiences for generations and David Thewlis is the perfect actor to bring him to life.
“We’re delighted that he, Ken Stott and Miranda Richardson are heading up this stellar cast to bring one of the nation’s favourite stories to BBC One.”

The UK's top film critics will present Miranda Richardson with their highest accolade, the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film, at their awards ceremony on Sunday.
Born in Southport, Lancashire, Richardson made her film debut in Mike Newell's Dance With a Stranger (1985) and has been acclaimed for her work in movies, theatre and television. She has been nominated for two Oscars (for Damage in 1992 and Tom & Viv in 1994) and seven Baftas, and won both the Bafta and the London Critics' Circle Film Award for Damage. Her ongoing film work includes projects with directors such as Steven Spielberg (Empire of the Sun), Robert Altman (Kansas City), Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow), Neil Jordan (The Crying Game), David Cronenberg (Spider), Stephen Daldry (The Hours) and Nicolas Roeg (Puffball).
This past year, she appeared in Amma Asante's acclaimed historical biopic Belle and the current release Testament of Youth, based on Vera Brittain's memoir. She also had a memorable cameo in Muppets Most Wanted and teamed with Anna Chancellor to revive Mapp & Lucia on BBC One.
In anticipation of receiving this latest award, Richardson said: "Thank you to the Critics' Circle for this gift in memory of one of the great women of film history. I'm looking forward to an evening of celebration of the medium Dilys Powell loved and which, against all odds is still dominating our hearts and minds."
Dilys Powell was an iconic British author and film critic who pioneered a new style of cinematic journalism. The British Film Institute famously described her as "open to new directions in cinema ... not constrained by the middle class shibboleths of 'good taste'." Her final review, of Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, was published in The Times on the day of her death in June 1995.
Recent Dilys Powell Award honorees include Nicolas Roeg, Kristin Scott Thomas, Helena Bonham Carter and last year's recipient Gary Oldman. The award has been given out annually since 1991, when it was presented to Dirk Bogarde.

Miranda Richardson: 'I don’t like labels of any kind' THE BBC is recreating Mapp And Lucia, a wonderful comedy of snobbery, starring the Blackadder actor Published: 00:01, Sun, December 7, 2014 By David Stephenson Miranda Richardson opens up about the new BBC comedy remake Mapp And Lucia
What was it like filming in Rye?
Just like Miss Elizabeth [her character Mapp] and Georgie [Steve Pemberton, who also adapted it] walking down the streets, there were similar vignettes in the town itself. You would see people playing bridge in the middle of the afternoon. It was sort of rather marvellous.
What was it like playing Miss Elizabeth?
Too much fun, so much so that we hope to have the chance to play it again. My favourite scenes were the opening sequences, when she was being shown around the house. This was close to Elizabeth’s heart.
The costumes and set looked like fun
Mine only amounted to jazzing things up with the odd scarf. You don’t get everything absolutely sorted (character-wise) before you start shooting, it’s an organic thing. So the whole thing is constant while you’re filming. Not exactly research, but delving into character as you go along. The other thing was to work in the actual house [of author EF Benson] and the town where it is set and the environs. We also had the use of the gardens, which had never before been allowed. We also built a garden house [where Benson wrote the book before it was bombed by the Luftwaffe] on the plot, to accommodate a camera, apart from anything else. It was just delightful.
There aren’t many dramas or comedies which are, if you like, female and almost middle aged! Would you agree?
There’s an increasing number of dramas I think on television recently that I found myself wanting to watch, such as Happy Valley, so that’s encouraging, and I always admit the possibility of change. Not to be depressing about it but the demographic is changing and people have more say in what they want to see. We also had Last Tango In Halifax but this is a classic. How wonderful that he created two such strong opponents. They don’t have to be some received “dolly” idea of womanhood.
Did you watch the 1980s TV version?
I didn’t. When you come to a project like this, it’s one of the choices you make. I’m quite pleased because I don’t feel any particular pressure from that adaptation.
You were introduced as “Queenie” and Anna Chancellor [Lucia] as “Duckface” at the show’s launch. Did you mind?
Well, I don’t like labels of any kind. I think people probably know about that character by now, but there’s nothing wrong with making people laugh, if that’s the legacy, but we’ve both done loads of other stuff.
How were the false teeth?
It was difficult, particularly for eating, but when you’re working with someone like Steve Pemberton from The League Of Gentlemen, you have to get into “externals!” There’s a lot about the teeth in the books. It was a little treat at the end of make-up. I would slip them in at the last minute and go, “Ah, there she blows.”
