Wowness. That commentary sounds so jealousy-evoking.

The commentary is pretty indeed. Haven't watched the second part yet, parents WILL be silly enough to insist I be social of an evening, but I shall try and remember any further info I get from it.

Well, if you live in a Region 1 DVD area, it will probably be easier for you to get hold of than it was for me. Alas, tis the only format it comes it *pets Mum's multiregion DVD player*
I'm pretty sure you can order it from amazon, if you're interested.

did you learn anything new about Merlin today himiko? Managed to watch part of the second part today. Some more random bits of trivia: The director wanted Arthur to be another of Merlin's failures, in a way, so they wanted him to be a slightly weak character compared to the strong Arthurs in other tales. Mordred was apparently really hard to cast, they were filming already by the time Jason Done was cast, as I understand it. The bit on the end of the first part, with Mab standing on the cliffs, used a stunt woman for the wide shots of Mab, and then filmed Miranda's closeups elsewhere, for obvious safety reasons. The small child playing little Mordred was rather scared of Helena Bonham Carter after they filmed the bit where she told him off for being rude. To film the bit in the sword-from-the-stone part, where Mab zooms out of a rock, they filmed Miranda shuffling really, really slowly towards the camera, then sped it up. The almost-battle between Lot and Arthur was shot in Wiltshire, rather than moving the whole crew back to Wales for just the one day. I think he said that the jousting scene was the one filmed on the first day, but I'm not entirely sure. *end trivia*

Right, scuse me for double posting, but let's revive the sub-board a bit with a new post:
Some more trivia bits:
The scene in the magical forest/cave near the end was acheived by filming in the forest in the dead of night, and using a very bright light suspended from a crane
It took about an hour and a half in makeup to create Frik's gnome look.
The filmmakers had to do all they could to make Mordred look younger than Arthur, as they worried that Paul Curran actually looked younger than Jason Done.
Merlin flinging the sword into the lake took about 8 takes to film. According to the director, in 7 of those takes, the sword didn't even hit the water. Sam Neill lost his sense of direction during the spin, it seems.
The final battle between Merlin and Mab was, in the earlier versions of the script, meant to take place basically the whole length of Britain, with huge special effects and forests and magic etc. But then budget came into it, so they scaled it down, and placed it somewhere more personal to the story.
I shall edit if I remember any more, LOL.

Hui, thanks!
Yes, the budget ... that would have been one hell of a scene, but I think I like the actual scene better; dunno if special effects in '98 could have handled it without making it look cheap.

i always wondered why Arthur was such a weakling. guess there was a reason.
that would have been a GREAT scene! too bad. but yes, it would have been cheesey.
um. hrm. *tries to remember what i was going to say* ah yes!
i know Sam Neil was in makeup for four hours to be old Merlin.
AND
*stupid question*
did James Mallory's books come before or after the movie/miniseries?

Hmm, judging by the fact that the coverwork features promoshoots for the movie, I'd place my money on 'after'....

i know. it's a dumb question. but sometimes, books are written before and then when they are made into movies, they redo the cover with promo shots.
that's what they did for 'Ella Enchanted'. the book came first, but then they relesed it again with a picture of Anne Whats-Her-Name on it.
so i was just wondering if that was the case.
IF they came after then . . . . WOW. he was really cool to come up with all that background info. and extra plot twists just based on a quick movie.
