Also - another great British actress - Julie Walters. Again she has such great versatility, making you cry and laugh in equal measures. Her comedic talent is unrivalled and I have loved watching her films and tv progs with Victoria Wood. She is a complete standout in everything she does and comes across as a really down to earth, genuine person. Agreed. She's brilliant. I like Educating Rita best, and I love her in Dinnerladies where she plays Victoria Wood's character's mum.

The only movies that come to mind with Kristin Scott Thomas are the English Patient, which I love, and Gosford Park. I haven't seen Gosford Park, but my family is obsessed with it.
Bette Midler is funny. When I was a little girl I loved the movie Hocus Pocus. It's really ridiculous now, but that makes it hilarious. I also liked her in the First Wives Club. That movie isn't spectacular; but it's enjoyable, and there are a lot of well known people in it. I guess the Rose would be her best movie, but I've only seen parts of it.
I would definitely recommend you see the Kill Bill movies, but be advised that they are for certain audiences lol. My mother HATES them.

I' ve just seen My Brilliant Career again after about twenty years or so. Career is the movie that introduced Australia and the world to Judy Davis and Sam Neil. This movie is very much a woman's film both in front and behind camera - produced and directed by women and the screen play was written by a woman. The story is a turn-of-the-century Australian piece dealing with the protagonist - Sybylla Melvyn - who goes from teenager to a young women with the desire to become a writer and succeeds. She suffers disappointments along the way (or there would be no story) but finally feels accomplished and liberated. A piece by Shuman is played throughout the film and in one scene Judy Davis actually plays it for real. The sights of Australia are some I've never seen before and the movie shows how primitive much of Australia was a century ago- a frontier country much like the US was back then. I love My Brilliant Career now as I did over twenty years ago. Both Sam Neil and Judy Davis have had successful careers and, as I said, this film was a great opportunity for them.

I've just said this elsewhere. The Australian movie My Brilliant Career, released in 1979, introduced Australia and the world to Judy Davis in the role of a young Australian, Sybyll Melvin, who longs to be liberated by becoming a writer in turn-of-the-century Australia and succeeds. Judy Davis was (is) superb in this film, which co-starred Sam Neil. I don't think that Judy Davis has been mentioned by any Mirandatian that I have read. Here's another "great" actress. I read an article in which Miranda Richardson was compared with Judy Davis. The comparison does both actresses justice. I fully agree.

Judy Davis is awesome. Another one I love with her in it (though a completely different genre) is 'The Man Who Sued God' with Billy Connolly. It's LOLarious . I <3 Billy Connolly.

No one mentions Manda's name-sake (but no relation) Natasha Richardson, who is daughter of Vanessa Redgrave, niece of Lynne (sp) Redgrave and grand daughter of the late Sir Michael Redgrave. I have no opinion of Natasha Richardson because I have not seen her films.

You should buy or rent out a film called 'Evening'. Not only has it Natasha Richardson but Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep, Mamie Gummer, who is Meryls daughter, Toni Collette and Claire Daines. Well worth it!

Well worth it! Evening is an excellent film! I saw it in the cinema, and thought Mamie Gummer's character looked exactly like a young Meryl Streep. I didn't realise that they were mother and daughter.

interesting that someone [todd] mentions natasha richardson. She says she moved to the US to escape the shadow of the Redgrave comparison in the UK. Is now married to a marvelous Irish/American actor Liam Neeson, who I personally will never forget as Oscar Schindler in SCHINDLERS LIST. Supposedly fell in love while co-starring in NELL with jodie foster. In the late 90's she won the TONY award for best actress in a broadway drama for her reprisal of the role made famous by Liza Minelli {another daughter of a legend- Judy Garland] in CABARET. Obviously comes by her acting genes honestly. As an aside, is the older sister of Joely Richardson, who has found success in the US in the tv show NIP/TUCK.

Susan Sarandon anyone? Sharon stone, Diane Lane, Elizabeth Perkins-though I generally hate her in movies.
