All I get is "Are you called Kristina or Martina?" "No, just Tina!" "Just like that?" "Just like that." "Without anything else? Odd ..."
I'm not very fond of my name. It sounds so incomplete.

That's interesting, that they try and be more formal with you. I had teachers in high school that I hardly knew who called me 'Ang' and 'Angie' - Aussies are so fond of not wasting breath on a full name when they can say half of it

I don't think they wanted to be formal, they were just curious because Tina is normally short for something. but then again, germans are pretty formal. most of our teachers call us "Sie" now (the more respectful way of adressing someone, like saying vous in french), but most still use our first names, and those who now us from earlier years still say "Du" , which is way more comfortable. but we have only one teacher who allows his students to call him by his first name. it's already considered generous when we may leave the Doctor away, and several of our teacher wear a suit every day. they're pretty up their own arses, but until last year one of the suit-wearing teacher was at least polite, so you forgave him his being formal because he had style. you knoe, lifting his hat when greeting (and he greeted everyone who so much as murmured hi), or holding doors open for girls when he's about to go through one, and let them go first. that's really seldom here, even among our suit-wearing guys.

Yes, same here. Not many people hold doors open for you, and when you try and ghold doors open, half the people who walk through don't even say thank you! Grrrr...
Our teachers all let us call them by their first names. I don't think I actually know what one of my Maths teachers' last name is...
