She couldn't have been better and no one could have pulled off the role the way she did. I hope she wins. That's exactly what I was trying to say, only put in slightly better words. However, I still have to go with my namesake and support Helen Mirren.

Acutally they're not up against each other. Meryl is up for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and I think Helen Mirren is up for Best Actress in a Drama because I wouldn't consider The Queen a comedy.

I just watched "The Manchurian Candidate" for the first time and Meryl is absolutely brilliant in it-as always:
Raymond: *about Marco* I served under him. He's a good man.
Eleanor: That's what the neighbors say about serial killers.

This is kind of lame, but I actually became a fan of Meryl when I watched her in A Series of Unfortunate Events. Haha. I didn't feel like it did justice to the book, but I liked it anyway. Meryl was hilarious as Aunt Josephine.
Had a chance to watch Postcards... and Out of Africa before, but didn't. Argh. Thank God we have The Deer Hunter here at home.

Meryl was sooo beautiful in The Deer Hunter. And Robert de Niro and Meryl looked so good together! Great movie. I thought it would be boring, but there's something about it that keeps me watching.

I'm very likely to get lynched for saying this here, but, after all the hype I read about Meryl Streep, I'm always left feeling very underwhelmed when I watch her in films. It's not that she's a bad actress, it's just I watch her films, expecting to be really impressed, and I've yet to be really bowled over. Admittedly I haven't watched a lot of her films- the only ones I've watched recently are "The French Lieutenant's Woman" (I thought her English accent was quite bad in it), and "The Hours" (I thought Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore were better, and yet she seemed to get more screentime. Of course, Miranda showed up and outclassed them all)- and I didn't really enjoy either of these two films as a whole, which might have been why I was left feeling underwhelmed.
I wondered if any of you knew a good film with Meryl Streep in it where you think she is particularly outstanding- perhaps I'm just not watching the right films.

You should check out "Sophie's Choice." Meryl is brilliant in it and she recieved an Oscar for her performance. "Kramer vs. Kramer" (her other Oscar winner) is great as is "Music of the Heart."

I've already said how Sophie's Choice made me depressed for a couple of days, but it is good. For comedy you must see She-Devil and Death Becomes Her. My mother has an obsession with Out of Africa, so I can't stand it anymore.

(I thought Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore were better, and yet she seemed to get more screentime. Of course, Miranda showed up and outclassed them all) I agree with you about that. I thought Meryl was still good though, just not fantastic. Was Miranda offered any of the leading roles? I think she would have been brilliant at all of them, particularly Julianne Moore's part. I didn't expect to like The Hours, so I avoided it for ages, but I actually ended up really enjoying it.

Alright, I'm sure you all know...but Meryl won the Golden Globe lol. Bill and Emily also won...I'm still pissed Miranda wasn't even nominated, although they mentioned her. I'm thrilled that Beyonce got stiffed on everything and even lost to the Happy Feet song lol. I'm furious that Leo lost. He better win the oscar. I was surprised that Babel won for best picture when it won nothing else. Helen Mirren of course won I think two at least, I don't remember. She was nominated like four times lol. Umm...I guess that's it. Well I don't understand why Jennifer Hudson won, I didn't like her on American Idol, but whatever...as long as she doesn't win the oscar, I don't care. Jeremy Irons won lol. He looked like crap though, all grizzled and wearing a weird outfit, but whatever lol. That's it, I suppose.

I'm so glad Meryl won. I would've been so royally pissed if she had lost to Beyonce. But, I agree, it does suck that Miranda didn't get nominated.
