RENT is amazing. The plot is unique and different; the characters believable and likeable; the music is awesome. I havent' had the pleasure of seeing it on broadway but I love the movie. Particularly Idina Menzel as Maureen. She's awesome.

*Gasps* Rent thread???
*dances for eight hours non-stop*
Idina is...my goddess...I can't believe I will see her in Wicked...on stage...in front of me....it's like a dream come true.
She is amazing as Maureen. I've seen the show 11 times in the UK and all the Maureens I saw were really bad. I think it's a really hard role to get right, you need to be fascinated by her and she needs to be likeable. Most Maureens play it as just plain annoying.
I think, other than Idina, my fave cast members of the film are Anthony Rapp (Mark) and Adam Pascal (Roger) although I love them all.
I guess I can never forget my first Angel and Collins...they will always be the REAL Angel and Collins to me *is sentimental*
Have you read Anthony Rapp's book? It's about Rent and also the death of Jon Larson and of his mother. It's a beautiful, truthful book. Made me weep.

No, I have not read the book. But now I shall have to look into it. I've only recently been introduced to RENT because my drama teacher had us watch the movie in class a few months ago. Now my friend is obsessed with it and I rather like it myself. I'd have LOVEd to see it on broadway with the original cast though. But, I'm quite a number of years too late for that. *sighs dramatically*

Wow your teacher must be a really cool person!! The book is called 'Without You: A memoir of love, loss and the musical Rent'...it really is quite a stunning piece of writing. I felt very honoured to read it. Check out Jonathan Larson's other musical 'Tick Tick Boom'..it's fab too. It's so sad that he won't write any more musicals....I heard it described somewhere (on one of the many Rent programmes I've seen!!) that once he'd got Rent out of his head and had it realised on stage...he was free to die. He'd given what he needed to give. His 'One Song Glory' I think that's a lovely way to look at it. I mean, it's devastating that he died so young but he will live on in Rent and TTB forever. It really brings the lyrics to a greater truth when you think of him writing them. xxxxxxxxxxx

Very true, very true indeed. It really does give the songs more meaning in a tragic way. And, yes, my drama teacher is the best. We even watched PoTO in there. ;D Not that no one else besides me was actually WATCHING Phantom. Depressing.

The dvd of the movie is out in the UK in September ;D ;D ;D ;D
It's an amazing musical...I could describe the story but I'm not sure it would do the passion and heart of it justice. If you want any songs sent to you, let me know.
I remember reading a quote that went 'Rent is the anthem of all artists'...I thought that was true.
It's about emotional honesty, living for the moment, not selling out.... I could go on for a while!!!

I've just found out that Ruthie Henshall's husband, Tim Howar, is currently in the Broadway production of Rent.
I can't wait to see the film, it's one that I've never known much about, but always been interested in seeing. I've heard one of the songs (Seasons of Love or something like that) and I love it.

...
-starts singing RENT at the top of her lungs-
LAAAST YEARS REEENT!
Okay, I'm done.
I saw this amazing musical ONSTAGE for which I am very lucky. Would you believe that there were only, like, less than fifty people at the ticket lottery? Geez. I bet you Hairspray gets a better turn out, and that musical is just plain terrible. But we got in and I fell in love with ANGEL from the moment I saw him.
-swoons-
Then I saw the movie and it all kind of went downhill into fangirlism from there.

The whole show itself is amazing. Personally, my favorite song from it is "Take Me or Leave Me."
