So glad you had a great time and that you found Dress Circle ;D Isn't it fabulous?? I love looking at those Phantom ornaments and the Wizard Of Oz ones. Were the fabulous gay musical theatre oracles working when you were in there? Who's in Les Mis and Phantom in the leads at the moment? That's so damn annoying that Madame Giry is rubbish. I guess after Miranda anyone would be downhill though. I remember seeing a clip on a dvd of something...could be the extras on the film...with Madame Giry being appallingly mean...I didn't like that. Is she a lot differently written for the stage? Dress Circle is fabulous. I approached it from the wrong direction. I was in the street that Chicago theatre is in, and luckily I picked the right road to go down to find the shop. There were a few camp ones, but not as many as I was expecting! My God, those Phantom and Wizard of Oz ornaments! I had to swiftly move downstairs to stop myself from buying them! Next time I go I want to get the monkey box that plays Masquerade. It was the extras from the film you saw Madame Giry in. The woman on the DVD is the woman I saw play the first time I went. Her name is Heather Jackson and she's FABULOUS! She's horribly mean on the stage show. She's got this cane that she carries around with her which she's supposed to bang off the stage and it's brilliant! The problem with the woman I saw last week (Annette Yeo her name was) was that she played it similarly to Miranda and it didn't work for the stage show. In the stage show she's got to be horribly mean to the ballet girls, have lots of authority and bags of stage presence or it just doesn't work. Annette Yeo had 0 out of 3. What I loved about Miranda is that she obviously realised that the way Giry is usually played in the stage show wouldn't have worked for the movie and changed it accordingly. The guy that's playing Phantom is called Earl Carpenter and Christine is played by a girl called Rachel Barrell. In Les Mis, Jon Lee is Marius. I couldn't tell you about the rest of the cast as it was their last day on Saturday and I'm not sure who was staying and who was going. I'd imagine the Javert would have gone as he was pretty bad, but I don't know about the rest. You should get Joe in Chitty as I'm pretty sure the tour's going to Southampton before Edinburgh, but if you don't see him, I'll tell you all about it. Right, Avenue Q. From what you've told me about the stuff you generally like, you might not enjoy it. It's basically a complete p**s take of Sesame Street. A guy called Princeton has just graduated from college. He moves into Avenue Q and it's basically the story of him trying to find his purpose in life with the help of his neighbours in Ave Q. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it half as much as I did. I think I'd go back and see it again. It's worth a watch, but considering it's a bit different to what you usually go for, I'd try to get discounted seats for it. I really liked Julie Atherton. I really want to see Sunday in the Park, but one of my friends has asked me to take her to see Les Mis and Phantom at Xmas, so I'll probably be going there again. No great hardship though! I'll have to choose between Sunday and Evita. Any advice? Evita will probably win it because of Philip Quast. I was talking to someone on another forum, He's contracted for 10 months apparantly, which means he'll be leaving around about April next year. I've heard of all of those musicals that you've been in, but never seen any of them. I think I understand what you mean about Jeckyll and Hyde. I was going to see it when it was in Glasgow, but I saw Blood Brothers (I think) instead. I meant to ask you ages ago who you saw as Fosco in Woman In White? I saw a guy called David Burt, but I really wanted to see Simon Callow, but he had left before I went. I'm always interested to hear about what people think of Lion King. It's never one that I personally have wanted to see, but people I have spoken to who have seen it either love it or loathe it. I've never heard someone say it was just OK. It must be doing something right to get a reaction out of people, but it's really not my cup of tea at all.

I saw Anton Rodgers as Fosco...he wasn't that great, I didn't think...how was David Burt? I would have liked to see Simon callow or Michael Ball, but hey, Ruthie more than made up for the fact I didn't!! My brother saw Evita tonight...he was raving down the phone at me. He saw Elena, the lucky sod. Said she was just electric. I have to go again because I refuse to let it ruin the production for me that I saw that appallling Eva. You definitely need to see Philip Quast though, he's just amazing. You'll be so proud! Shame you won't see Sunday In The Park.. probably, I'll have to send you some of the songs instead maybe. Phantom....Weird fact...Rachel Barrell is in fact from Portsmouth!! I remember her being in a local amateur company!! Didn't know her personally though. I'd have to see Madame Giry in context to get the character played that way, I think. It will be weird as I am so used to Miranda...and so love her and the gentle firmness she has. Avenue Q sounds ok actually... I doubt I'll see it, purely because I already have too many things to see!! But it sounds cool, from what you say! I'd like to hear the songs. I'll be in London next Friday. Going to see Juliet Stevenson talk about her work at the National (Juliet, for me, is second only to Miranda so I AM SOOOOO EXCITED!!!!) Do you know of her? Then in the evening I'm seeing 'On The Third Day', which is the winner of 'The Play's The Thing'. Only going cos an amazing actor called Paul Hilton is in it, but it looks interesting. Did you watch any of the programme? Ohhh the monkey is the best one of them!! I love the little guy in the film, I wanted Miranda to outbid old Raoul for it xxxxxxxxxxx

Both times I've seen Phantom has been since I've seen the movie, and both times I've found it weird that whenever Madame Giry starts talking, its in an English accent rather than a french one. You have to see Rachel Barrell in Phantom if you sort of knew her. She's in it until October I believe and she's very good, perhaps a better actress than singer. She has an alternate who I know does Thursdays and I think also Mondays, but I'm not sure if she's good or not. I love the monkey too, and I don't like Raoul. Madame Giry should have got the monkey, end of story.
I watched the second and third episodes of The Play's the Thing. I was in London when the last episode was shown and I forgot about the first one. I thought it was really interesting, as I want to work in some aspect of theatre, either producing or directing when I'm older. I'm hopefully starting a theatre studies course at university in September if I've got good grades in my school exams, but I don't find out my exam results until the first week in August.
I've heard of Juliet Stevenson. What's she been in, I think I've seen her in things but I'm not sure. It'll be really interesting for you to hear what she says, especially if you admire her so much. I wish Miranda would do something like that, although if she did, all of us here would probably go and we'd scare the poor woman.
According to various websites, the Eva alternate will do Monday nights and one of the Thursday shows in Evita, so those are the days to avoid if you want to see Elena. I've also heard Saturday matinees are dodgy if you want to see Elena also. Elena should be great. If you translate her name into English, it's the same as mine. But I want to see Philip Quast as Peron so much. I had Hey Mr Producer on the other day. He's so great. Only about 6 months before I go!
David Burt was good as Fosco, but he was a little to camp for my taste and lacked the sinesterness (is that even a word) that from reading the book I feel the character should have. Also, in the book, Fosco is described as being really fat, but David Burt didn't wear much padding. When I saw Michael Ball in concert, he sang Fosco's song and he was pretty good at it, but again he was very camp (or camper than usual). Was Anton Rodgers an understudy or principlal? I've never heard of him.
Have you heard that Anthony Head isn't doing Sound of Music any more? I heard it on the Whatsonstage forums, but there was a link to Anthony's official site that said he wasn't going to be in it. Who do you think will play the Captain now? My money is on a certain Mr Barrowman. It makes sense since he's one of the judges in the TV show...
Avenue Q is good, but I don't think the critics liked it very much. I read a review in The Observer today, and the guy didn't like it very much. It takes a while to get used to, as you've got to focus on the puppet rather than the actor, as most of the actors play 2 or 3 different roles.

''Madame Giry should have got the monkey, end of story. ''
Damn straight, girl!!
I seriously didn't even sort of know Rachel Barrell, just knew she was around my area and in shows. But yeah, I would be interested to see her...just worried about my reaction to mean Madame Giry!! I think I'll see Les Mis first.
What did you think of the look of the play on The Play's The Thing? The guy I love was playing the 'Jesus' role...he had a beard...Paul Hilton is his name. Can't wait to see him act again, he blew me away at the Donmar. I'll tell you how it is.
Ahhh yes I knew you wanted to direct, you're going to direct me as Elizabeth in The Crucible aren't you?!!
Juliet Stevenson is essentially a theatre actress but she was in the films Emma, Bend It like Beckham, Pierrepoint, Nicholas Nickelby, Truly Madly Deeply...? I can't wait to hear her on Friday, I'm so excited!!! Seeing her in 'The Seagull' in August at the National too.
My brother said that Michael Ball was the best Fosco (he saw Crawford, Ball, Callow)- said he was the only one who captured the humour and sinisterness at the same time. Anton Rodgers was the principal, not understudy, but he was rubbish to be honest!!
I so so hope you're right about John Barrowman...although....when does Sound Of Music open? I know he's doing panto in december in Wales. And he's busy recording the Dr Who spin-off, Torchwood, this Summer.
V sad about Anthony Head. I saw there were rumours about Michael Ball though too?
Now, here's a question...what are your top ten musicals in order? And your top ten songs from musicals??

So that's who Juliet Stevenson is, I knew I recognised the name. Make sure you tell me all about it.
The Sound of Music, if I remember rightly is opening earlier than expected, November sometime perhaps? I don't know if Michael Ball would play the Captain to be honest, it's not exactly a big part, but then again neither was Fosco, so you never know. I'd have liked to have seen him as Fosco, but it was either seeing him as Fosco or Ruthie as Marion. Easy decision. I thought of John because it seems a bit strange that he's on the judging panel for this TV show, yet he's seemingly got nothing to do with the production.
I've had a rethink about The Crucible. If my directing it happens sooner than expected, then I'll cast Miranda as Elizabeth. I'd cast you as Mary Warren. Here's my explanation as to why. I would cast you as Abigail, but she doesn't have any significant scenes with Elizabeth, Mary does, in Act 2. I had to sit through that scene about 5 times as half my drama class acted it for their exam. If it happens later rather than sooner, you're Elizabeth my girl!
The plays the thing I thought was coming along pretty well in the episodes I saw, but I'm not sure if I like the publicity adverts for it. It seemed to be pretty popular, as plenty of people were buying tickets for it when I was in London.
Top 10 musicals and musical songs in order? Umm, I don't know, but I'm on holiday at the moment (I'm on the hotel's computer and I'd better hurry) so I've got plenty of time to think about it and I'll post next time I get near a computer. What's yours?
Yes, go see Les Mis before Phantom. Mean Madame Giry rocks, (just not the woman who's playing her just now, great singer, terrible actress) although not quite as much as Miranda!
I meant to ask you, have you heard the I Love Musicals CD? Ruthie has 6 songs on it which are excellent. Most of the rest of the songs are really good too. I don't like one of the songs and that's the version of Dreamed a Dream. Some bright spark decided to let Martine McCutcheon sing it. Bad idea!

*Bad Fran has been away and has missed musical chats* *slaps wrist* Thought anymore about the lists Helen? I'm too hot and tired at the moment to conquer them but I shall be ready with them soon. Crucible- I like your thinking!! Let's do it soon, please? Maybe we could do a reunion production sometime in the distant future with me as Elizabeth and Miranda as Rebecca Nurse??? Ooh musical gossip!! I read an interview with John Barrowman, and not only did he turn down Spamalot, but he also turned down Sound Of Music and Wicked!!!! Arggggggggggggghhh, damn the boy. He'd be such a great Fiyero. Oh my god, I haven't told you about Juliet!!!! It was the single most amazing day in my life. All the things she said in the talk were so insopiring and renewed my excitement about acting, and renewed my passion and determination. I won't bore you with it all cos I could go on all day!! I met her too...She was lovely, she said she'd do a play with us Perhaps she could be in The Crucible??! Loookyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy On The Third Day was ok...but the cast were better than the actual play. It was an interesting idea and all, but the dialogue was a little self conscious and clunky. Paul Hiolton was bloody marvellous though. Charisma on legs. Really brought the play into another league. Shame it's closing early but I can understand why. Hope you had a fab holiday darling? xxxxxxxxx

You met her! Cool. I wanted to meet Ruthie after Woman in White, but I was with my mum and she was like "why?" and she was also still mad at me for going to the stage door of Les Mis earlier in the day to meet Claire Moore (another favourite of mine.)
Which one are you in the picture? I loved Juliet in Bend it like Beckham, she's brilliant. I'll need to see some more of her films. Can you recommend any?
Can't believe John turned down all three of those. I'm not that interested in seeing Spamalot, and him not being in Sound of Music saves some money as I won't go unless there's a fantastic supporting cast, but I'd have loved to see him in Wicked. Have you heard any more about who is playing the Captain in SOM? I've run out of ideas.
I'm not sure if you know, but Ruthie's doing something at the Chocolate factory where Sunday in the Park used to be on the 21st of August. Not entirely sure what it is, but it's Ruthie. I don't get back till Saturday and all the tickets will probably be away by now.
Crucible-Juliet can be Elizabeth! She's willing! Then we can do the reunion show in the future and minipulate Miranda into playing Rebecca. I could also play Betty Parris as I'm really tiny.
Right, lists. I've got a top 5 for musicals. Here goes.
1. Les Mis 2. Blood Brothers 3. Phantom of the Opera 4. Miss Saigon 5. Yentl.
I'm trying to put the rest in order. Woman in White would probably be number 6, but I don't know how I'd enjoy it without Ruthie in it.
Why is On The Third day closing early? It seems a shame for the cast and creative team who put so much effort into it.
Still on holiday, but I'm back on Saturday morning. I'll think about my lists on the long flight home and type them up over the weekend or next week.

Yentl is awesomeness. *tackles Barbra and completely fangirls her to the extent of fangirling and starts humming "Papa, Can You Hear Me?"*

Oh, and Juliet wise, I recommend 'Truly Madly Deeply'...it's a really sweet film, and lovely Alan Rickman's in it too She is just vibrant in it. Also 'Emma' is a good one...the one with Gwyneth Paltrow...Juliet is hilarious in it. She does more theatre really though xxxxxxxxxxx
