This story is Idath/Math and other stuff. We need some life on this forum and Mab is awesome, just watched Merlin last night so hope you'll all add something It was late in the evening and Mab was sat silently in front of her vanity table. Her long dark Raven hair spilling over her cream white shoulders. In her bed was Idath, the man who she always swore she'd not go back to but always did. He knew her too well, she hated him for it. Slowly the large muscled man sat up and walked over to her. "A problem my Queen?" He frowned, his hands stroking her shoulders. "Well actually yes." She muttered. "I always tell you not to come back and you always do. I think you get pleasure out of annoying me." She hissed. Idath laughed and looked at her reflection in the mirror. "You always see the bad in people." He whispered and placed a kiss on one of her cheeks. Mab glared at him and quickly stood up, adjusting her nightdress. "You infuriate me." Mab shouted into his face, but Idath couldn't help but smile.

Mab shot him one last glare and slipped away. She knew the promised time had come. She listened attentively to the sound of a woman in labor. The woman's shrieks filled her mind until, finally, the sound of a crying baby.
Ambrosia closed the eyes of the mother and turned away with the baby in her arms. She flinched as she came face to face with Queen Mab who stood not three feet from her. Queen Mab smiled and held out her arms, "Let me see the child."
Ambrosia reluctantly handed the infant to her. Queen Mab gazed down at her little creation obviously enthralled by the baby. "I name this child, Merlin."
"While you're making gestures, save the mother, she's dying." Ambrosia snapped at her.
"No she's not. She's dead." Mab replied and turned her attention back her child.
The child would need to be cared for. Mab suddenly realized. What to do? Mab didn't know the first thing about babies even if she had been inclined to do it herself. Her eyes immediately fell on Ambrosia. Could she trust Ambrosia? She couldn't see Ambrosia harming Merlin, but...Ambrosia was no longer hers. She might try to turn the child against her. Perhaps a more suitable guardian, but who...?

It was later that evening that Mab had decided what to do with her child. She would raise him herself. It was the only logical way to do it, as she was the only one she completely trusted. She'd have a nanny of course, but she'd keep a close eye on everything and make sure he didn't go against her. He would love magic, take her back to the top and stop her being forgotten. Idath slowly walked in and looked at her carefully. "You look deep in thought." He said simply, his eyes watching her carefully.
"I have decided...I am taking care of Merlin." She smiled. Idath sat beside her and looked at her, he almost thought she was joking, so gave a small laugh. Which was a bad idea, Mab hated people laughing at her. With one flick of her wrist she sent his chair forward, throwing him literally out of his chair. "What is so funny about that?" She hissed.

"Mab, do you know anything about raising a child?" Idath asked. "I know enough about children to know that you have no idea what you're getting yourself into." Idath chuckled to himself. "But I'll stick around to watch this little drama play out. This should be interesting."
Mab silently cursed Idath a second time. He was annoying as hell....but there was some truth in what he said. Mab gazed down at her precious son. He was fast asleep in his cradle. Idath standing behind her, wrapped an arm around her waist. "He won't be that quiet for much longer, my love. Babies never stop crying." Idath warned her.
--- "Raelyn!" Mab screeched. "Yes, Mistress, I'm coming." Raelyn took the screaming enfant from Mab and attempted to sooth Merlin. Mab left them both, her patience long gone.
Idath leaned casually against the corridor wall. Mab shot him a glare, daring him to make a smart remark and give her an excuse to unleash her aggression upon him. But he smiled teasingly, gloating in the knowledge that he had been right, Mab knew nothing of children. "He always screams." Mab complained. "He only calms down for Raelyn." Idath titled his head to listen. "The kid has a healthy pair of lungs, that's all." Mab grimaced at him.
---- Raelyn's skin sparkled in the ambient light of Mab's world. Everything sparkled here, but there was no sky, no sun or moon or stars. The light seemed to come from nowhere or the objects themselves. Raelyn kept a close eye on Merlin at all times. She was very attached to him. She was a fae, one of the few still alive. Raelyn had left the land of magic long ago and gone to live in the human world. Unlike most fae, she really enjoyed human companionship. She also understood humans, including babies, thanks to her previous experiences living in the human world. That's why the Mistress had chosen her. Raelyn would have preferred to remain in the human world, but her Mistress had demanded that she return and promised her anything she wanted to get her to come willingly. Raelyn was still a true fae, clever and crafty. She knew that kind of promise was powerful and binding, especially coming from her Queen. She would wait and see what happened before deciding how to best use the promise to her advantage.

Idath sat on his throne and looked at around him. The room was dark and dim, only lit by a few candles. Looking towards the door, he saw a figure of a woman. It was Mab. Standing up slowly he walked towards Mab. "Something you need to tell me my love?" He asked carefully. He knew she had been hiding a secret from him and he planned to get her to reveal it of her own free will. Mab shook her head and stared at him with piercing eyes. "What am I supposed to have done Idath?" She muttered. Her eyes stared at him so intently it was luckily she didn't set part of him on fire.
Idath looked at her and stood directly in front of her. As always he towerd above her in height, she hated that. "Nothing to tell me? Not one thing?" He asked carefully. Mab sat down and adjusted her dress, refusing to answer his stupid questions. "It's just...I happened to see a woman around here. I haven't seen her before. Now...She is either a follower who has charmed her way into your good books. Or she is a new member of staff...Or...You have not been completely faithful to me. I doubt it's the last one, but I like to throw it in for good measure." He smirked.
Mab stared at him and let her dark nails move over the arm of the chair, scratching at the wood in annoyance. She hated when Idath checked up on her, she was the damn Queen down here not him. She could do what she liked.

Merlin laughed happily as he watched Raelyn flick small stones at the fish. They scattered away every time, but continued to return as if to taunt them. A couple of times Merlin tried to enter the water to chase them, but Raelyn calmly held him back while he squirmed in her arms in frustration. "Merlin..." she chastised, "No, you can't swim." Merlin pouted at the edge of the water until Raelyn suggested that they play a game. "Whoever can skip their rock the farthest wins." Raelyn explained and showed him how to skip the stone across the surface of the water. Merlin's first attempts only ended in the rock falling straight down into the water, but after awhile he managed to make one skip. Raelyn's rocks skipped six or seven times each time she did it. She soon started working magic as well to make it more entertaining for Merlin. He laughed when the rock skipped back to him across the water. He lunged for it, but it bounced out of reach. He chased it as the stone bounced off the walls and ceiling completely ignoring the laws of nature, but he finally caught it. Raelyn liked to tease, but she always let him win in the end.
Still holding his rock like a piece of treasure, his mummy and that strange man suddenly appeared. Neither one glanced his way as they walked deeper into the caves arguing about something. That was typical though. His mother paid very little attention to him. She always seemed very busy and not that interested in children. Raelyn was more of a mother to him than her. But Raelyn always tried to direct his affection away from herself and towards his mother. Merlin did not understand this behavior at all.
He decided to follow the two of them out of curiosity. Raelyn made no move to stop him. Both seemed completely absorbed in their argument as if nothing else outside the two of them existed. It made Merlin feel very lonely as he looked at his mother. The argument reached its climax and Mab slapped Idath across the face. Merlin only a few feet away winced at the sound. There was a momentary shock of silence, then Idath grabbed Mab's wrist in anger forcing her back against a wall. "No!" Merlin's voice broke free as he stumbled forward eyes locked on the fierce stranger, pleading with his eyes for him to stop. Both of them paused for a moment suddenly realising they had a witness to their violence and then Idath released her. "I'm not finished." and disappeared.
Raelyn gathered Merlin up in her arms as his mother stalked away, her fury evident in every movement.

The next morning Idath was back as promised. His dark eyes staring at Mab. "I was hoping you'd tell me the truth today." He held his cloak tight around himself and stared at her. She was silent, looking at her dark nails as if he bored her and not moving an inch from her throne. Idath's boots hit the floor hard as he walked towards her, grabbing her face with one strong hand. "I wont be your man on the side. I want to know if you are loyal to me. Have you slept with any man or woman lately?" He muttered.
Mab seemed amused and simply pushed her dark raven hair away from her shoulder. "Like you haven't." She smirked and then frowned darkly. Idath's eyes narrowed and he stared at her so strongly he could have burnt a hole into her very core. "Come on Idath...I know you have slept with other women. The Maid...You wonder why she left. I found her half naked in your bed and decided to shove the little harlet out of our home." She hissed. Idath turned away and stalked across the room, his cloak billowing behind him. "So have you tried to get back at me? Or done it for sport?" Idath growled.

"You will not order me around in my queendom. I am mistress here." Mab hissed, her eyes flashing dangerously. "Whatever I decide to do is none of your business."
"Now, you either learn to live with it, or you will remove yourself from my land permanently." Mab spelled out for him. "I have many things to do and no time for any ridiculous games that you accuse me of playing. If you want my affection, then you should help me restore the Old Ways to their former glory instead of hiding in your kingdom all the time ignoring the peril."

"So you want me to deal with whatever you may do? I see it only fair then that I may see anyone I like also." He smirked. "It goes both ways." He stood as close to her as possible, looking down at her. "You may be Mistress here my Queen, but for how much longer?" Mab frowned at him as he tried to touch her cheek and smacked his hand away. "I will not fade to nothing. You wouldn't like it, stop pretending you don't care about me. You are not good at acting like I am nothing to you Idath." She tilted her head, her hair spilling down one shoulder.
Idath groaned in annoyance, he hated when she tried to look deep into his feelings. "I know the woman I want wont go without a fight." He stated under his breath. Mab smirked triumphantly and drew him close to kiss him. "I was hoping you'd say that." She grinned, in her rough but quiet voice.

-----Many years later-----
Mab watched her son enter the room behind Idath and he jerked his head toward in her in a bow that spoke of nothing but insolence. Her eyes flashed in irritation, but she said nothing. They are both complete asses. Mab decided as Idath sauntered up and grabbed her around the waist as if she had granted him the liberty to do so. "You should show her a little more respect, Merlin." Idath chastised him hypocritically.
"Really..?" Merlin's eyes lingered obviously on Idath's arm around her waist.
Mab left Idath's hold and went to stand by her son, although she would have liked to slap him than pretend to show solidarity with Merlin's insolence.
"You need to leave now." Mab told Idath. A cruel grin spread across Merlin's face while Idath's face filled with anger.
"No" was Idath's one word response.
"You heard her. Do as your queen commands." Merlin sneered. "I've always done what she wanted. I've never failed her and never will because I'm the only one who can help her now."
Idath reached for the vindictive spawn before him, but Mab stepped in front of Merlin, protecting him.
Idath realized there was no reasoning with her, not yet at least. He would have to wait. Merlin was half-mortal after all. He was destined to make a mistake and fail her at some point. Then Idath would be gleefully waiting with open arms.
Just as Idath vanished back to his kingdom, he saw Merlin sneak an arm around his mother's waist. He ground his teeth in frustration.
--
Merlin carefully wrapped an arm around her and lightly brushed his lips against her neck. He breathed in her lovely lilac scent as he did so. She was so tantalizing. None of his feelings felt wrong to Merlin. Raelyn was his mother; she had always been his real mother. Mab was his Queen, she deserved to be worshipped.
Mab turned her body towards his as he continued to drop feather-light kisses on her pale neck. Shudders ran through his whole body as she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled his face down to hers.
Mab would deal with Idath's wounded pride later. Right now, she needed her son more than anyone. He was to be her champion and save her entire race.
Before things could get really heated, there was a slight cough from behind. Merlin paid no attention, but Mab tilted her head slightly to notice Raelyn waiting quietly behind her. "Merlin..." Raelyn caught his attention and he looked up disappointed by the interruption.
"What?" He pleaded innocently with her.
"You haven’t finished your lessons. You know it’s important." and then Raelyn left the room, clearly uncomfortable with the awkwardness of the situation. She did not approve of the direction his emotions had taken for Mab, but she never said anything about it.

Later that evening Mab was with Idath in her bedroom. She was sat on the bed listening as Idath tried to tell her something. The fact he couldn't just spit it out made her even more angry then knowing what it was he was hiding. Idath looked at her and then looked away. "It was a few years ago...Mary was...Mary was our Maid before...But then she got married to a Lord or something. I went to visit her one night when me and you were having one of our fights. I went there a few weeks ago, just to see if she was still with the old fool. And she ws." His eyes looked at Mab as he rested his back against the door.
"She has a child...A girl...Her name is Rose." Mab yawned and looked at her purple painted nails, she was so utterly bored at this moment she swore she may just fall asleep. "And how is the little Brat?" Mab muttered, twisting a lock of raven black hair around one of her fingers. "She's a special little one." He answered simply, moving about the room slowly. "You're giving me a headache." Mab hissed in a low growl, her hand touching her sparkling forehead.
"Special how?" She asked, pretending to seem interested, she had no idea where he was going with this little tale about that Bitch Mary. "She has magic...Mab...She's mine. Merlin is yours and Rose is mine. Not like you should care, you throw me out of your bed often enough. I just thought I'd let you know before you went insane if someone else told you."
Mab's eyes turned dark, her lips pressed firmly together, her fingers clenching into a tight fist. "Yours?" Mab shouted, standing up and sending him into the large double doors, causing them to crack. Idath stood up and brushed himself off, nodding. "Yes she is, don't you touch her. She wont be any harm." He stated simply.
If Idath knew Mab and he did, she was bound to want to hurt Ros to keep her from ruining Mab's plan. "All I can say is to keep Mary on side, if she knows you will keep bad mouthing her or hurt her, she'll just make sure that Rose hates the old ways. But...But if we get Rose to spend time with me...I mean me and you. You can teach her to love the old ways. Make her be on your side. Mary wont be happy about it, but I'll be dambed if I'll lose you over this." He grabbed Mab firmly by the arms and kissed her firmly on the lips.

"And what pray tell is your brilliant plan to make this Rose girl like magic?" Mab said examining her fingernails with disinterest. "Why shouldn't I just squash the brat instead of worrying about?" Mab glanced over at her former lover, "Don't come running to me with your mistakes Idath."
Mab snorted in derision at the thought that a mere maid could be a threat to her, magic or not. After all these years, Idath still clearly underestimated her.
"My son will be king. End of story."

He nodded. "Yes...Well...I want her to not hate us. Maybe that is silly, but I don't want my daughter utterly hating us." Mab looked at him and frowned. "I don't much care about Rose...I only care about us. We have a King. We do not need a Queen." She stated firmly. He looked at her and frowned. "She wont be Queen Mab. I want you to understand that this is for us. Mary is not one to be meddled with. I know we could easily dispose of her. But I don't think Rose would think much to that."
He walked down the hall and then breathed deeply. Days later Idath went to visit Mary again. He stared at her and frowned. "Mab was not happy. But I told her I want to see my daughter." Mary stared at him and arched an eyebrow. "Yes I bet you do. To turn her into one of your little followers." She hissed.
Idath glared at her and stood up. "I want her to know who she is, is that a crime?" He shouted. Mary heard Rose cry and picked her up from the floor. "She is our daughter, that is all she needs to know."
