I don't really like Patti Lupone though. I saw a concert version of Sweeney Todd she did and absolutely hated it. I thought she was awful. But then I saw the bit from Gypsy she did at the Tony's and was impressed. Overall, her voice isn't very good in my opinion.

Her voice is just a little different from the soft-laundered stuff we're used to hearing, much brassier and edgier. You can't deny she's got technique, otherwise she'd never still have the voice she has after all these years. The rest is just personal taste, and that's not to be judged.
Personally, her concert version of Mrs. Lovett is my favourite of all times. I first stumbled across a vid of her "Worst pies in London" when I was hunting for the movie clips on YT, and at first, still having Helena's softer voice in my ear, I kept thinking: "You awful woman, stop screeching your way through the song." But then she did this one movement after stomping the invisible bug, and she totally had me. That's my Mrs. Lovett: loud, obnoxious, screechy and opportunistic, hen-pecking with everyone who doesn't agree with her. A fishwife par excellence. She just isn't this fairy-like porcelain doll the movie turned her into, pretty as it looks.
As for her Mama Rose, it kills me that's I'll never be able to see it, or see any live performance of her for that matter. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed because they're talking about filming it and releasing it on DVD.
I can only judge from video footage, but my impression of her is that she's huge: huge mouth, huge lungs, huge voice, huge personality. She's too much person for a screen, too loud, too dramatic. She needs a theatre that she can fill, or she will seem over-acting. She clashes, and I can easily see why people would not like her. For me, those are the exact reasons why I love her. Muchly.

Alright, I get your point but Helena's Lovett was not my first. I grew up with Angela Lansbury of course and SHE is my perfect Mrs Lovett. Although Helena had part of the look, I think Ms Lansbury embodies Mrs Lovett in absolutely every way. She had the older, creepy bar maid appearance and a gorgeous voice to match. I think something about Patti Lupone's preformance made it seem like she KNEW everyone was there for her; like she was the only star. Part of it just seemed arrogant. But if she does it for you then BRAVA! Oh! But as Mama Rose (as much as I love love love love Bernadette) she is ACE! I loved what I saw on the Tony's (as mentioned before) and I YTed more clips just this morning actually.

I had the fortune of seeing Patti in Gypsy back in July-and then I got her autograph at the stagedoor afterwards. She was absolutely incredible, even though I'm still somewhat partial to Bernadette in the role (even though I never got to see her do it other than the soundtrack and clips on YouTube-curses finding out about the show five years too late!!). I still think that Everything's Coming Up Roses is more of Patti's strong point rather than Rose's Turn, but she still brings down the house with the latter.

And, I doubt everyone was there for her. I bet a lot of people were there for George Hearn. Ah well, let's not judge people's motivations if we know nothing about them. The beauty of all this is that if you don't like it, you just don't watch it or don't listen to it. Yay for freedom!
