Blackadder Exclusive: The Whole Rotten Saga *UK Premiere*
Thursday 9th October, 9pm
“Oh, God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.”
One of British comedy’s favourite sons celebrates his 25th anniversary this month, and G.O.L.D. kickstarts the party with two, exclusive programmes that talk to the stars, go behind the scenes and provide enough trivia and first-hand knowledge to send any fan of Blackadder into raptures.
Through the ages, Britain has been littered with power-mad kings, bloodthirsty queens and the odd nutty prince; and during those times one dastardly dynasty has managed to survive on their wits, craftiness and the odd cunning plan.
For over 400 years the house of Blackadder has ridden pillion with some of history’s greatest names. Throughout the centuries, Edmund Blackadder was often the power behind the throne, and the driving force during times of turmoil, but his positions of power were gained for one thing and one thing only – for his own greater wealth and personal standing.
Traveling with him through the times was his trusty sidekick, Baldrick, and a small army of familiar, recurring characters – Melchett, George, Percy, Darling and even Lord Flashheart, to name but five.
Thanks to these adventures, Blackadder became one of British comedy’s best-loved and most-quoted characters.
“You see the ancient Greeks, your Highness, wrote in legend of a terrible container in which all the evils of the world were trapped. How prophetic they were. All they got wrong was the name. They called it 'Pandora's Box', when of course they meant 'Baldrick's Trousers'”
Now, 25 years after the character’s first appearance on British television screens, G.O.L.D. tells the story of how Edmund Blackadder came into being, how the character changed over the four series, how the stellar cast was assembled, and the real inspirations behind Baldrick’s cunning plans.
G.O.L.D.’s first celebratory programme is Blackadder Exclusive: The Whole Rotten Saga, which gathers together the cast and crew to provide a complete picture of the origins and evolution of the Blackadder dynasty. It even has a brand-new Blackadder theme tune, composed by the series’ original theme tune writer.
Those sharing their Blackadder knowledge include writer and creator Richard Curtis, writer Ben Elton, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Tony ‘Baldrick’ Robinson, Tim McInnerny, Miranda Richardson, Miriam Margolyes, Patsy Byrne, Brian Blessed, producers John Lloyd and Howard Goodall, and directors Mandie Fletcher and Richard Boden.
These giants of British comedy will tell the Blackadder story via first-hand, on-set accounts and anecdotes, and reveal why the show still holds a special place in their hearts. Blackadder Exclusive: The Whole Rotten Saga also shows behind-the-scenes footage never seen before on British television.
Never before has such a comprehensive re-telling of the Blackadder story been assembled.
