Must...find...now... Speaking on HP/Merlin crossovers, someone's started writing one on ff.net. Here's a link to the author, she's written some other Merlin stuff, too. The HP one should be at the top, it's called "Dawn", I think. www.fanfiction.net/u/753777/

oh i got the dvd of gideons daughter today thanks ange
ummmmm to tell you the truth i was bitterly disappointed i thought that the storyline was rather all over the place, miranda was brilliand and i adored the choir scene temendously, but i do feel that it wasnt at all one of stephans best work. I didnt feel that the plot when deep enough it didnt get into the minds of the characters to the lengths it should have. the idea was brillinat but it was disappointing to see that it wasnt developed enough. also i found robert lindsay to have a rather pointless role.
some critisisms of miranda *shields self* i found her acting in places to be a tad weak and too flamboyant. i felt that the film glided too softly over the plot. stella's grief wasnt explored to the length it should have been and to be honest there were some pretty pointless happenings.
eeek i might stop therei can just see everyone sharpening their pitchforks
i do want to say that i did enjoy it and i loved some parts of the film, cant wait to see his next one.and miranda was brilliant, i loved her clothes and i've fallen in love with those dam boots!

I wasn't a big fan of Gideon's Daughter either. Loved Miranda in it, but didn't think much of it over all. The acting was good, but with the exception of Stella, every character was so damn miserable, and they all seemed quite slow and depressing, which made Stella seem more haywire. I thought it was quite depressing all-in-all, but Miranda brightened up the screen. Overall though, I think I'll stick to my "Merlin", ta. *huggles DVD*

Fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion. I can't say I agree, but that's what makes us all different, is it not?
I think what you're referring to as lack of depth is something I took for subtlety. I saw suggestions, restraint, pensive characters who didn't know how to express themselves. I saw breakdowns of communication. I saw them all moving toward this sense of inevitabilty - the death of the century - too fast for them to handle.
I think death is a very big theme in GD. What Stella has experienced is a sort of death and rebirth of herself through grief. Gideon is holding on to the fractured relationship with his daughter and trying to keep it alive, and all the while there is this sense of time passing and things coming to an end. It's uncertainty, really the millenium thing, because no one really did know what the new millenium would bring. I recall that quite clearly.
And of course there is that perfect analogy in the end - it took me until the second viewing to really pick it up. The song turned around, and it's not about Gideon's daughter at all but it's about him - he loves her too much that it's unsustainable, and he's the one that dies and is reborn in the back of that comedy club.
I think the story and the setting held a lot of personal significance to me. It's the first film I've ever really seen that dealt with the new millenium in such a way - was set in a time I can remember, and captured feelings that I thought were very true to the time. The death of Diana - oh, boy, I remember that. I was only 11, and living in Australia where it would have been quite different to being in England, but boy I remember it. And I remember the lead up to 2000 rather well, as well, that feeling of change in the air that I think the film captures beautifully. I think I was most disarmed, though, by the father-daughter relationship. It felt so real to me, and it affected me quite powerfully, mostly because I think it made me understand what Gideon was feeling - mostly about his daughter going away, and feeling alienated from her - and it meant a lot to me in terms of my own relationship with my father ("I don't want you to go, you'll get blown up by terrorists"). So that was kind of personal, and I suppose my own context meant that meant a lot more to me than it might to other people.
But yes. I think what I saw the most in that film was restraint and subtlety, which for me is what made it brilliant.

I saw Gideon's Daughter last night! OK, I still prefer The Lost Prince but I found these quite good too. I just had one problem: I saw it at 3 o'clock in the morning so I had to put the volume so low that I couldn't understand all the words... and it was without subtitles... I loved Stella!! How is possible? Miranda is always surprising me! Stella was so human and so original! Miranda is really sweet in this role!

Ahhh yey!!
I love Gideon's Daughter. So glad you loved it.
Funny you should say about the volume thing cos I remember when I first watched The Apostloe I had it REALLY low cos everyone was asleep, it's so damn annoying, you feel as if you haven't seen it properly.
What did you think of the other performances? And the film as a whole? Did everyone see it's companion piece, Friends and Crocodiles?

I watched a bit of Friends and Crocodiles as I thought that was the one Miranda was in. I didn't watch the end as I wasn't enjoying it that much.

I loved it! I love Damian Lewis and Jodhi May as actors anyway, so it was always going to be good for me. I loved the eccentricity of Damian lewis's character and the mad and wonderful and joyous things that happened around him. Not as good as Gideon's Daughter but still pretty damn good, I thought. i would like to talk more about it but it seems ages ago when it was on, I can't remember it that well!!

Hi Kids!! Oh I miss you guys. I just got high speed Internet at my house after a year and a half living without it. I'm hoping that this means I'll be on here more...however, the point of my post is to adore this programme which I watched a few months ago.
I have to say that this was the most honest, beautiful, and thoughtful work I've ever seen in years. The scene when Miranda and Bill's characters are lying in her bed for the first time and they are just talking and holding each other. I don't think I've ever seen anything better than that moment. It literally took my breath away it was so surprisingly touching.
Okay this might all be redundant to what all of you have said, but I loved it and had to share while I thought of it.
I hope this means I'm back. I'm going to try. I always check in on the news...excuses excuses. Yay!!
